University of Arkansas prof
to speak about Civil War
BY AMANDA PALM
The Battalion
Guerilla warfare and its spread
during the Civil War will be dis
cussed this morning at 9:35 by Dr.
Daniel Sutherland in 204B Ster
ling C. Evans Library.
Sutherland, a professor of his
tory at the University of
Arkansas- Fayetteville, is the au
thor and editor of eight books
about 19th century America and
is planning on publishing two
more this year.
The Military Studies Institute,
a part of the history department
at Texas A&M invited Sutherland.
Sutherland’s research focuses
on a combination of social and
military aspects of 19th century
America.
“I don’t focus on major battles
and leaders,” he said, “but on the
men in the ranks and the rela
tionships between them.”
Sutherland said guerrilla war
fare was more widespread than
historians recognize.
“There are two kinds of guer
rilla,” he said.
“There was one that recog
nized no authority and one that
fought in uniform and was at
tached to the army and more con
trolled.”
Sutherland will also discuss
the impact the Civil War had on
Southern civilians.
“The impact was terrible, and
civilians suffered as a result of
guerrilla warfare,” he said.
Chip Dawson, director of the
Military Studies Institute and a
professor of history, said the in
stitute hosts speakers each
month.
“It’s a way for A&M to have
scholars come in and tell about
their research and experiences,”
Dawson said.
The lecture will last 45 minutes
and will be followed by a short
question-and-answer session.
Religion, women topic of prograr
BY APRIL YOUNG
The Battalion
To broaden perspectives of how
the rise of religion has impacted
women. Gender Issues Education
Services will present a film celebrat
ing Women’s History Month today at
7 p.m. in 130 Academic Building.
The program is part of a semes
ter-long film series focusing on
women’s issues and on lesbian, gay
and bisexual issues. The film. Bat
tle for the Minds, will depict Amer
ica’s largest Protestant denomina
tion, Baptists, and its impact on
women.
“March is Women’s History
Month, and since the Baptist faith
is a large denomination with a lot
of women, we thought we would
recognize that,” said TYicia
Draughn, coordinator of the film se
ries and a graduate assistant for
Gender Issues Education Services.
Draughn said the film is particu
larly relevant because it represents
the beliefs of many Baptist students
on campus.
“Since this is a conservative cam
pus, and in many ways religiously
conservative, the film is important
because it gives an example of those
who are involved in the Baptist
faith,” Draughn said. “For those who
are not involved in the Baptist faith,
it could provide an excellent oppor
tunity to leam about the faith and its
effect on women,” she said.
Nancy Thbbs, a graduate assis
tant of Gender Issues Education Ser
vices, said this film is different from
previous films because oltt'j
portance of religion on this a {
“We wanted to showaffej
would be important tostudi
this campus,” TUbbs said.“Rej
is very important on this car
and this film is very though
voking because it looks ala
temporary issue — fundamel
ism in the lives of women-s]
is an ongoing issue,” shesaio
'Ilibbs said the program
students a chance to discus
role of religion as it rela
women.
“The program is an oppor
for students to examine them
ligion plays in women’s lives
positive and negative, audits
spark discussion of those vs
sues," TUbbs said.
