Putting up the
:: Freshman Lisa Klam has
put up impressive statistics in
first collegiate softball season
BY BEN WESTBROOK
The Battalion
T he 1999 softball season is well on its way and this year the Aggies
are following behind freshman, Lisa Klam, who is knocking out the
opposing pitchers and clearing away the base paths for the 10-4
Aggies.
Klam came to A&M from Katy High School, a 5A school near Hous
ton, where she helped lead her team to three playoff appearances while
playing under former Aggie All-American Judy TYussell. It was there Klam
made the all-state team three times and nabbed the prestigious 1998
Gatorade Circle of Champions Texas Softball Player of the Year award.
But Klam does not worry much about the awards or statistics. When
asked about her nine-game hit streak to start the season Klam replied, “1
try not to keep up with them, because sometimes they can really mess
you up if you do.”
For Klam, there are many impressive statistics to focus on. The fresh
man has a .367 batting average with 18 hits. She leads the team in home
runs (1), Slugging Percentage (.551), RBIs (8), and total bases (27). She
is in the top five in doubles, triples and batting average as well.
Despite her dominate performance, softball is not something that just
came naturally for Klam. She said hard work and dedication is responsi
ble for much of her success.
“I started playing when 1 was seven,” she said. “My dad spent hours
and hours outside teaching me how to just throw the ball right.”
Head softball coach Jo Evans said she thinks all the time Klam spent
practicing was worth it.
“She’s probably one of the best athletes I’ve ever recruited," Evans
said. “She’s an impact player, and she is making an impact at the Divi
sion I level.”
Klam says that she almost did not come to A&M.
“I was so set on going to LSU, but then 1 came to A&M and 1 was just
kind of like, ‘This is my home,”’ Klam said. “People here always smile
at you, and they treat you like they’ve known you forever even though
you just met them five minutes ago.”
Klam said Evans has done her part in making the freshman feel at home.
“I love her,” Klam said. “She doesn’t yell and scream at you like some
coaches do. She has her own subtle ways of letting you know what she
wants done.”
