; Students announce intentions to file for student body president

Official filing for candidacy for
student body president does not be
gin until March 1, but the A&M cam
pus is buzzing with names of those
who intend to file.
^Bour students have been identi
fied as potential candidates. Howev
er, the following may not be the only
ones remaining. Anthony Edwards,
Will Hurd, Kendall Kelly and Bran-
doti Neff said they intend to file for
student body president.
Kendall Kelly, president of the
Class of 1999 and a senior Spanish
major, said she intends to file for stu-
dent body president.
Anthony Edwards, junior bio
medical science major, said he is
considering running for student
bodv president.
p-Will Hurd, MSC Council presi
dent and a senior computer science
and international studies major, said
e intends to file for candidacy. He
isaid a student body president candi
date should be aware of their possi
ble effects on future and enrolled
students.
“A student body president candi
date should have an understanding
of how the University works and
how the position impacts the stu
dents here as well as the students
who could walk on this campus,” he
said.
Hurd also said he has begun to
create an exploratory committee.
Kelly said running for student
body president would be a learning
experience, and she “is pleased to be
surrounded by such qualified po
tential candidates.” Kelly said one
role of student body president can
didates is informing the student
body about the duties and capabili
ties of student government.
“The studept body should know
the University administration is re
ally willing to work with students,
and the communication gap be
tween the two has been significant
ly shortened,” she said.
Kelly also said last semester she
formed a staff for her upcoming in
tended candidacy.
“I have gotten together an in
credible group of people which will
make this a neat experience regard
less,” she said.
Head yell leader and senior polit
ical science major Brandon Neff said
he intends to file for student-body-
president candidacy. Neff said it is
important for a student government
candidate to understand they could
be a representative of all Aggies.
“SGA (Student Government As
sociation) is a representative group
of the campus because they are
making decisions for all Aggies, and
it is important everyone feels that an
SGA member is there to serve as a
voice for them,” he said.
Neff said it is still early, and the
formation of a campaign staff is still
in the works.
Students who want to run for stu
dent body president must file at the
Student Government Office from
March 1 to March 5, must have a 2.5
grade-point ratio and must be in
good standing with the University.
Potential candidates are not permit
ted to begin campaigning until
March 21 at noon.
