The concert will showcase the Singing Cadets and the Aggie Wranglers, in a guest appearance. The Ronald McDonald house provides a temporary home for fam ilies of children admitted to Scott and White Hospital for an extended period of time. More than 4,300 families have resided in the house. Tim Stone, a member of the Singing Cadets and a sophomore chemical engineering major, said the concert is the group’s major event for this year. He said now is an unusual time for the Cadets to host a concert because new mem bers join each semester, and they normally are not prepared to per form yet. However, he said the new members will perform tonight. “We’ve been working with them real hard, and they’re up to speed now,” he said. Aaron Dobbs, service co-chair for the Singing Cadets and a sopho more journalism major, said he and other members of the Singing Cadets and Alpha Delta Pi have been planning the event since the beginning of last semester. He said it took time to get sponsors and generate publicity. Dobbs said Alpha Delta Pi has chosen the Ronald McDonald 1 louse as its national;. most of the funds lie projects go toward house. GAMESWRM TEXAS ASM UNIV • GAMESTORM AT »3> COLUMNS X /0" Psychiatrist testifies on convicted murderer, finds him mentally unste EDINBURG, (AP) — A psychia trist testified Thursday that the man convicted of killing and muti lating a 12-year-old boy had an anti-social personality and had contemplated suicide because he feared the death penalty. “I know they’re going to kill me, so I’d rather take my life,” defendant Pablo Lucio Vasquez told Diego Ro driguez Escobar during a September evaluation, the doctor testified. Rodriguez, who determined that Vasquez was mentally ill but com petent to stand trial, was the de fense’s first witness during the punishment phase of the Vasquez’s capital murder trial. ‘‘The fact of the matter is mur derers are usually your best behaved inmates and, when and if released, they are also your best behaved on parole,” said Jonathan Sorensen, a criminal justice professor at the Uni versity of Texas-Pan American. Both sides then rested in Vasquez’ punishment phase and state District Judge Fernando Man- cias began preparing jury instruc tions with lawyers. Jurors will de termine whether 21-year-old Vasquez deserves to die by injec tion or be in prison for life. Vasquez was convicted of killing David Cardenas, whose body was found scalped and dismembered in a vacant field in Donna. The sev enth-grader was killed the night of April 17-18 while partying with Vasquez and Andy Chapa, 15. Rodriguez determined that Vasquez was anti-social, had a sub stance abuse problem and was de pressed about facing the death penalty. He also determined that Vasquez had intelligence that was in the low range of what is consid ered normal, that he suffered from attention deficit disorder and that he had trouble learning. People diagnosed as anti-social tend to be predatory in nature and are bound to repeat past mistakes, Ro driguez said during cross-examina tion by prosecutor Joseph Orendain. It is a trait common to serial killers and mass murderers, he said. ‘‘They are very cold in the way they act,” Rodriguez said. The doctor added that he could not determine whether Vasquez is a continuing threat to society. ‘‘We cannot predi: psychiatry,” he said. Rodriguez said k| what Vasquez told h: past and the killing conclusions.
