in Italy, France, Spain and Germany, but the
church takes no official position,” Stranges
said.
Yet another version takes place in third cen
tury Rome, when Emperor Claudius II en
forced a law that forbade men to marry, so
they could volunteer for the army without
having to leave their families behind.
Valentine, in opposition, married couples
in private and was subsequently imprisoned.
Because of his stand on true love, many
youth came to see him.
“In the recent seminar on the history of
kissing, I learned one of the young people who
came to visit him frequently was the daugh
ter of a prison guard, whom he had a rela
tionship with. On the day he died, Feb. 14, he
wrote ‘from your Valentine’ which is probably
where the exchanging of notes on Valentine’s
day comes from,” sophomore genetics major
Tr Serna said.
Charles Panati, author of Extraordinary Ori
gins of Everyday Things, writes the origins of
Valentine’s Day comes from the Roman Em
pire when Feb. 15 was the feast of Lupercalia
to ask the god Lupercus for protection and to
glorify Juno, the pagan goddess of women and
marriage. Centuries later. Pope Gelasis decid
ed to rid the holiday of its pagan past by hon
oring St. Valentine instead of Lupercus and
changed the date to Feb. 14.
Eventually, St. Valentine’s Day became as
sociated with love.
According to The Catholic Encyclopedia, the
common observation during the Middle Ages
began because birds began to assemble into
their mating pairs during the second month of
the year.
This led to further associations between St.
Valentine’s and love.
The actual exchanging of written valentines
came when people started exchanging poems
in the early 1400s and cards in the 1600s.
Over time, the valentines became obscene
to a point where post offices rejected the cards
because they were unfit for delivery.
“Printed cards came to America in the ear
ly 1800s by a woman named Esther How
land,” Stranges said. “They ranged in cost
from $5 to $35.”
Another Valentine’s icon commercially val
ued is Cupid with his arrows dipped in a love
potion with which to shoot people so that they
may fall madly in love.
Cupid, who originated from Roman
mythology is associated with the saints day
because he is the son of Venus, goddess of
love and beauty.
No matter how the holiday came to be, St.
Valentine’s Day is a day which celebrates love.
“Once St. Valentine gave flowers to a cou
ple who had a happy marriage as a blessing.
Later, many more couples asked for his bless
ings,” Stranges said. “This was probably how
love became associated with St. Valentine’s
Day and still is today.”
