The 26th annual Texas Human Nutri tion Conference, “Food & Pharmacy: Nu trition, Herbs and Dietary Supplements,” will include functional foods, herbal med icines and dietary supplements. Dr. Martyn Gunn, professor of bio chemistry and nutrition and chairman of the conference committee, said con sumers should look for a scientific basis behind claims being made by makers of herbal medicines and supplements. “A lot of claims have been made on hearsay, not scientific fact,” he said. Gunn said since dietary supplements are not stringently regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, buyers should beware. “Because [supplements] are unregu lated by the FDA,” he said, “you never know how much you’re taking.” Speakers at this year’s conference will include: David B. Schmidt, senior vice president of food safety from the Interna tional Food Information Council; Dr. Cathy Kapica, of nutrition and clinical di etetics at the Chicago Medical School; Dr. Charlotte Gyllenhaal, of the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy, Dr. John A. Milner, head of the Nutrition Department at Penn State; Dr. Daniel M. Sheehan, of the Division of Reproductive and Devel opmental Toxicology at the National Cen ter for Toxicological Research; and Dr. David Lamb, of the School of Physical Ac tivity and Education at Ohio State Univer sity. Justin Wood, a conference coordina tor and a senior agribusiness major, said the goal of the conference is to bring col lege students together to share ideas on service. “It is to promote the idea of service and volunteerism,” he said. “And to cre ate a forum where ideas and experiences can be shared.” Roger Bower, director of human re sources for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central Texas Inc., is presenting a workshop at the conference and said col lege students play a role in helping the children served by the foundation. “College students have a real strong way of connecting to children,” he said. “Because of the closeness in age, there is an immediate connection between volunteer students and the children.” Wood said the conference will include outreach activities and a fair displaying service opportunities. “The participants will have the op portunity to go out in Bryan-College Sta tion and do some hands-on service work during the outreach activities,” he said. “At the opportunities fair, organizations nd mainKi uougli ome from er civiliza Boday, a will have information at resoiKlg, aiu ) ov Participants can comebyi mm tormation on what iheorgan:.
