T housands packed Reed Arena yesterday to
watch the Roman circus that is World
Championship Wrestling (WCW). As ex
pected, the combatants treated the audi
ence to a series of acrobatic assaults and
batteries making Aggie Wranglers look like a Spice
Girls choreographer and making weight watchers
campus-wide wince.
The first bout of the evening, between Glacier and
Chris Adams, was really no fight at all.
Glacier, throwing a temper tantrum, left the ring
and refused to come back as the referee began to
count him out.
Just before possible disqualification. Glacier reen
tered. He should have saved himself the trouble —
Chris Adams won the bout.
Next on the card for the evening was a battle be
tween Van Hammer and Earnest “The Cat” Miller.
Miller, despite the antipathy of the crowd, which at
one point was repeatedly chanting “pussy cat” won
the fight.
Third was a clash between Chris Benoit and Dave
Taylor, two of professional wrestling’s wel-known
foreign imports.
The low point of the match came when Taylor be
gan to insult a member of the audience. Good taste
won, and Taylor lost.
WCW capitalized on the bad blood between our
campus and the other one down the road when Bob
by Doncum entered the square circle wearing his
Texas Longhorn Jersey and chaps worthy of any
member of the Village People.
Adopted A&M favorite son Kanyon faced off with
him in the fourth bout of the night, supported with
“beat the hell outta tu” yells led by Jacob Hender
son, a sophomore mechanical engineering major.
History repeated itself, though, and Texas A&M
came up short after a fierce brawl.
The next three fights were a sweep for the crowd
favorites, with Raven besting Scotty Riggs, “Dia
mond Dallas” Page pinning “Bam Bam” Bigelow and
Sting trouncing Bret “The Hitman” Hart.
Raven, after a vicious pummeling from Riggs,
pulled out a win with a desperation move. Page and
Bigelow traded crippling throws and punches, even
crushing the referee in a corner of the ring, before
Page landed a diamond cutter and put the big Bam
down for a three count.
Sting and Hart wowed the audience with a clash
featuring, among other things, a beating with a fold
ing lawn table.
Hart almost won the match after punching Sting
with a foreign object while the referee was tem
porarily unconscious.
Sting rallied, however, and Hart learned the hard
way — cheaters never win.
