Aggie women look to repeat history versus OSU

The Battalion
Although the Texas A&M Women’s Bas
ketball Team has a conference record of 1-4,
the Aggies will try to keep a streak of sorts go
ing when they host Oklahoma State Univer
sity at Reed Arena Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Aggies got their first conference win of
the year on the road Jan. 6 against the Cow
girls. With a win Saturday, A&M would dou
ble its Big 12 victory total.
Head coach Peggie Gillom said the team
will stick with the same game plan that
brought the first win.
“We’re going to try to do what we did
against them the first game,” Gillom said.
“They’ve made some changes, and we’re go
ing to make some changes, we’re playing a
few more people, people who have been a lit
tle more productive for us. I’m sure they’re
going to want to do something different for
us, and we’ll just have to adjust.”
In the teams’ first meeting, A&M used a
balanced attack to earn a 67-51 win. Five
A&M players scored in double digits, includ
ing Kim Tarkington and Kerrie Patterson, who
had 12 points each, and Prissy Sharpe, who
scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Both teams are coming off road losses. The
Aggies went down against Iowa State Universi
ty, 77-60, Saturday, and the Cowgirls lost their
third straight, 75-53, against Texas.
As in the first game, A&M will have to over
come a size disadvantage to win, Gillom said.
“We match up with them well. They have
the height advantage, though,” Gillom said.
“Every team in the Big 12 has a weakness,
and our problem is with height. That’s why
we play a zone defense, but we’re pretty good
at man-to-man, too.”

A&M men’s squad faces Baylor Bears on road
BY SANTOSH VENKATARAMAN
The Battalion
The Texas A&M Men’s Basketball Team
takes their quest for its initial Big 12 confer
ence victory to Waco Saturday for a matinee
against Baylor University. Tip-off is set for
12:45 p.m.
A&M (7-8, 0-5 conference) has had a week
off to prepare for the Bears, who are in a sim
ilar position to the Aggies. Baylor is 6-13 over
all, winless in the conference at 0-6, and has
lost its last six games.
The Bears’ most effective player this season
has been senior Kish Lewis, who ranks ninth in
the conference in scoring at 15 points per game.
The 6-foot-7 center also is second in the Big 12
in rebounding with 9.7 rebounds per contest.
Baylor has been hurt by the departure of ju
nior point guard Tevis Stukes, who quit the team
Jan. 6. Stukes had been the Big 12’s leading
scorer, averaging 17.8 points. His starting point
guard slot is now held by the combination of
Rodney Smith and walk-on Austin Allen.
Baylor is 5-5 at home in the Ferrell Center
and has turned in some strong performances
in Waco, including outrebounding conference
leading Kansas in a close loss to the 19th-
ranked Jayhawks, 66-62, Jan. 6.
Coach Melvin Watkins, whose Aggies are
coming off a 64-43 loss to Iowa State Univer
sity Jan. 16, said he hopes the time between
games will benefit A&M.
Watkins said he has taken a “back to ba
sics” approach in preparing the team for Sat
urday’s game.
“We’ve had a week off, so we’ve been able
to go back and just work on the fundamen
tals,” Watkins said. “We’ve made some ad
justments that we hope will make us play bet
ter than we have the last couple of ball
games.”
One area the Aggies will look to improve
on against the Bears is turnovers. A&M is av-
see Baylor on Page 9.
