Polls released cunton Wednesday by ABC, CBS and NBC suggested the public’s approval of Clinton’s job performance are near all-time highs even as the Senate is hearing evidence on whether the president should be removed from office. His job approval rating ranged from 66 percent in the ABC poll to 72 percent in the CBS poll to 76 percent in the NBC poll. His approval numbers were three to five points higher after the speech, depending on the poll. By better than a 2-to-l margin, those polled by ABC said it’s more important for the federal govern ment to use the surplus for Medicare and Social Security rather than tax cuts. Republicans favor applying part of the surplus for Social Security, but want to use the remainder for tax cuts. The president advocated using the surplus to bolster a number of areas of spending, most notably So cial Security. Studying cancer rates among smaller groups it termed “special populations” will allow researchers to more accurately measure the impact of such things as “cultural and behavioral factors, beliefs, lifestyle pat terns, diet, environmental living conditions and other factors,” said the institute, which advises the govern ment on health issues. The report called on the National Institutes of Health to increase its efforts to determine why mi norities are more prone to develop and die from cer tain types of cancer. In TUesday night’s!
