Natalie Merchant Ophelia Formerly the lead singer of 10,000 Maniacs, Merchant showcases her ability to transform raw emotion into music her second solo al bum. The smooth melodies, combined with the beautiful piano and elegant string arrangements, make for a completely serene album. Sometimes described as the Emily Dickenson of pop music, this album will stir up emotions the listener did n’t know he had in him. “Life is Sweet” and “Break Your Heart” are, with their troubled under tones. among the best tracks on Ophelia. Ophelia is perhaps not the most up lifting CD, but what is to be expected from an album named after a tragic Shakespearian heroine? Garth Brooks Double Live This double-CD set allows its listeners to experience the feel of a Garth Brooks con cert- and if listeners have never seen Brooks perform live, the CD will give them a little taste of what you’ve been missing. Included on the albums are his latest releases “It’s Your Song” and “Wild as the Wind,” Brooks’ duet with TYisha Yearwood. Brooks’ natural charisma and ability to captivate an audience make this the album to own. His studio recordings just can’t compete with the energy of his live albums. Garbage perfectly mixes percussion and synthesized rock around the album’s aggressive and angst driven lyrics, while Manson’s seductive voice and bra burn ing attitude ignite the engine. ^ Meanwhile, Butch Vig’s -> drum loops paired with Duke Erickson and Steve Marker's guitar work provide the frame work for the red-haired diva to strut her stuff. Thefcattal Dave Matthews Band Before These Crowded Streets % The only things known to sink the Titanic are a) an ice berg and b) Before These Grounded Streets. The Dave Matthews Band and long-time produc er Steve Lillywhite bring their jam band fans an album dissonant and darker than their two previous releases. Filled with classic boyish lines of love and frustrated lines of despair, Matthews and the band leave behind their happy go-lucky days of "Eat drink and lx 1 mer ry” for the solemn approach of "Don’t burn the day away." Although change is apparent in the band’s style, there is a certain richness that always remains. Alanis Morissette Supposed Former Infotua- tion Junkie VCW Our little Alanis is all 'I TjL? grown up. X if ^ Thanks to her spiritual vjF trip !«' India, a : herself of anger and hostil ity for a more positive aura. The mature Morissette provides en lightenment on "Baba” and "Thank U." No longer under emotional distress. Alanis takes her head-strong attitude into the new millennium. With styles as diverse as electronica and pop country entering the public eye, 1998 gave the music industry a jump start into the next millenium. Once again, women stepped to the forefront as both band leaders and solo artists. Even jam bands were given a nod, something that hasn’t happened since the death of Jerry Garcia. For the first time in recent memory, the future looks bright for the next year in music.
