Fortunately for the Texas A&M Men’s Basketball Team, their op ponent yesterday was Lamar University and not the University of Rhode Island’s freshman sensation Lamar Odom as the Aggies man aged to hold off the pesky Cardinals 77-69. The win improved A&M to 6-1 for the first time since the 1988-89 season. Junior guard Clifton Cook led four Aggies in double figures with a career-high 27 points, but the real story was the play of sophomore for ward Aaron Jack and junior forward Jason Boeker in a key second-half surge. Jack tallied 10 points and seven rebounds while Boeker grabbed five rebounds and provid ed a much-needed defensive presence in his 12 minutes in the second half as the Aggies closed the game by outscoring the visitors 14-6. “I’m going to give credit to Jason Boeker and Aaron Jack,” A&M coach Melvin Watkins said. “They came in there and seemed to re bound, put a body on people, and pick our whole team spirit up.” The second half made up for another strug gle in the first half as the Aggies were out-re bounded and out-hustled as the Cardinals built a 35-32 lead. Lamar guard Matt Sundblad scored 13 points in the first half and A&M went to the break trail ing for the fourth time in their last five games. “We had a lack of effort in the first half.” Watkins said. “That was not a good Aggie ef fort there.” Lamar held the lead for the first 6:48 of the second half before Cook hit a three-pointer to tie the contest at 49-49. The next several minutes featured numerous ties and lead changes. After Lamar forward Rock Winston made a jump shot with 5:39 left to tie the game for the last time at 63-63, two free throws by Jack gave the Aggies the lead for good. Cook added a three-pointer and a short jumper in the lane and Jack scored off of an offensive rebound to cap a 9-0 Aggie run to push the lead to 72-63. The Cardinals would score six straight points to close within three, but Cook assisted to sophomore guard Michael Schmidt, whose ball fake and lay-up extended the margin to five. Schmidt had 10 points for the game. One free throw by Cook and two by Schmidt closed out the scoring. Senior for ward Shanne Jones was the fourth Aggie in double figures with 10 points. A&M swim team takes first Open medals on lasti BY JASON LINCOLN The Battalion In a single week the Texas A&M Student Recreation Center Natato- rium was host to swimmers from 30 different countries and gave way to 67 record swims, including three world records. “The opportunity of hosting this many people for five straight days in College Station, and to finally let the people know that this pool is one of the fastest pools in the world is just phenomenal,” A&M men’s coach Mel Nash said. The final day of U.S. Open ac tion concluded appropriately with the Texas A&M Men’s Swimming Team taking first and third place in the final event of the evening, the 400-meter freestyle relay. David Morrow, who swam in the winning relay, gave the Aggies their first medal earlier in the evening with a second place swim in the 100- meter freestyle with a time of 49.29. “It feels really good,” he said. “It’s gratifying that your hard work is paying off. ” The Aggie women’s team did not record any top three finishes but had a number of finals swims. “This [U.S. Open and World Cup] shows we can compete against top-notch competition,” A&M junior Monica Williams said. The teams’ performance sets up Aggie swimming for a strong sea son going into the spring. "We swam really well and we’re not very rested," Aggie women’s coach Don Wagner said. “This sets us up to be real competitive at the conference meet. The girls definitely have a confidence about them and that means a lot. “This meet was a great show case for the University and for the future of the program.” Megan Quann, 14, set her sec ond American record of the week in the 200-meter breaststroke with MIKE PUENTES!! Forward Aaron Jack drives the laneaga; a time of 2:25.52. “It was a lot of fun.’s “A lot of people were sari just a sprinter and lean 200. But I came out to proved them wrong."
