Contrary to popular belief,
Texas A&M’s 26-24 loss to the
University of Texas last Fri
day was not the end of the
Aggies’ season. In fact, their
season could end with a
bang as the Aggies (10-2, 7-
1) travel to St. Louis to play
the No. 2 Kansas State Uni
versity (11-0, 8-0) Saturday.
Kickoff is scheduled for
3:30 p.m.
“Our season’s not over,”
senior safety Rich Coady said
after playing Texas. “We still
have a chance to win the Big
12 Championship.”
“We’re happy to have an
other game,” coach R. C.
Slocum said. “Plus, we’re
playing the No. 1 team in the
country according to the col
lege head football coaches.
That’s a challenge in itself.
Another one is to win the con
ference title outright. Another
motivating factor is to go to a
Bowl Championship Series
bowl game. So there’s a
bunch of motivating factors
and it’s a high-stakes game.”
The winner of the game
automatically earns a spot in
the BCS. Another A&M loss
would likely send the Aggies
to the Alamo Bowl. However,
an A&M victory would prob
ably receive a trip to New Or
leans for the Sugar Bowl.
“That’s what this is all
about,” senior tight end Dan
Campbell said. “The Alamo
Bowl’s fine, but you want to
be at the best bowl you can. ”
Slocum said A&M needs
to put aside the Texas loss
and focus on K-State.
“When you first see the
team on Sunday, everybody
still has the mullygrubs and (is)
feeling sorry for themselves,”
he said. “But I think it’s really
positive that you can’t focus on
that very long because you
have a big game in front of you.
“All the news accounts
you read are about the game,
so you have something else
to focus on and I think with
out a doubt that we will be
able to do that. By the time
we get to the game there will
be a real excitement about
playing this game. ”
Kansas State enters the
game needing a blowout vic
tory to solidify a spot in the
national championship
game. The Wildcats, on the
outside looking in, are cur
rently ranked third in the BCS
poll behind the University of
Tennessee and UCLA.
K-State dominated its
competition this season,
scoring an average of 49
points a game, good enough
to lead the country.
The Wildcats’ headliner is
quarterback Michael Bishop,
a product of Willis High
School and Blinn College.

Temple is led by Ahna Kovaci, a
sophomore outside hitter from Al
bania. She leads Temple with 3.16
kills and 3.49 digs per game.
“They are usually very athletic,”
said coach Laurie Corbelli. “And
they have a very strong outside hit
ter from Albania and a couple of
other players who are internation
al players. So it will be a kind of
new look for us, but I think that
given the schedule we’ve played, a
nice tough schedule all season
long, that we’ll be prepared to meet
whatever they have to offer. ”
The Aggies have never lost a
first round match while Corbelli
has coached.
“We know that they are a top-
ranked team with lots of seniors on
their court,” Corbelli said. “They
have four returning starters and
have one of the top hitting per
centages in the nation. However,
we are playing really well at this
time, our attack is really confident,
our defense is improving and the
girls have had some really great
practices this week. ”
The Aggies will be led in the
tournament by Big 12 Freshman of
the Year freshman setter Jenna
Moscovic, and Big 12 first-team se
lection senior outside hitter Stacy
Sykora. Junior middle blocker Am
ber Woolsey was selected to the
second team, despite leading the
Big 12 with 1.81 blocks per game.
The Aggies are riding a season-
high eight match winning streak.
The Aggies are 7-7 against teams in
the tournament, six of those losses
from rival teams in the Big 12. The
other loss was against Pacific. The
Aggies have advanced to the Sweet
Sixteen tournament twice, last year
and in 1995.
If the Aggies beat Temple they
will play against the winner of the
University of Southern California
versus Maryland Baltimore County
game on Saturday night in the final
of the Regional. USC is the No. 4
seed in the East Regional and is 8-
4 against teams in the tournament
field. They have missed the tour
nament only twice.
The Aggies play tonight in Los An
geles at 5 p.m. at USC’s Lyon Center.

For most, the holiday season is
a time of getting together with
loved ones, eating lots of food
and celebrating another year
gone by.
For basketball teams, the holi
day season is a time for tourna
ments that take place from New
York to New Orleans.
The Texas A&M Women’s Bas
ketball Team will be competing in
its second tournament when they
travel to New York to compete in
the Big Apple Classic.
The Aggies will take on the
University of Massachusetts Sat
urday in the first round of the
tournament.
The winner of that game will
take on the winner of the Manhat
tan/Colgate game in the champi
onship round of the tournament.
The Aggies started off the sea
son 0-2 but have won two of their
last three games to improve their
record to 2-5.
Junior forward Prissy Sharpe is
leading th^ Aggies with 22.8 points
and 13.2 rebounds per game. She
scored 20.7 points a game in the
Cotton Bowl Classic last week
leading the Aggies to a second
place finish in the tournament and
earning herself a spot on the All-
Tournament Team.
Sharpe said the team is starting
to come together.
“We’re starting to mold as a
team, starting to get used to the
coaching staff and what they
want,” Sharpe said.
Sharpe said the trip to New York
will give the team a chance to get
to know each other better.
“It is just a chance to get to
know all the new team members,
and how they act and react with
each other,” Sharpe said.
Coach Peggi Gillom said after
a week off, the team is ready for
another game.
“We are just ready for another
game,” Gillom said. “The team is
getting to know each other better
and learning to do what we want
them to do.”
Gillom said while A&M will be
facing two challenging teams, the
Aggies’ goal for the weekend is a
tournament championship.
“We hope to come away 2-0,
Gillom said. “These are both good
teams we will be playing, but we
are not looking for anything other
than 2-0 and a tournament cham
pionship. We hope to win this tour
nament. This is a really big tourna
ment for us to win and it will show
people that we mean business.”
From New York, the Aggies will
travel to New Orleans to take on
TUlane, Thesday at 7 p.m.
