Texas A&M has posted a 170- hour warning notice on the Bonfire computer system, placed adver tisements in The Battalion and written notices in the Spring 1999 course schedule book to inform students approaching 170 hours. Spring 1999 billing statements will include a notice to all Texas A&M students, a reminder and no tice for students with 140 hours or more and an additional letter for students with 150 hours or more. "When 1 went to a doctor, I was never once asked if 1 had been a victim of domes tic violence.” Van Hightower said in 1997 there were 1,373 family violence cases in the Brazos Valley, and 776 of the cases were in Brazos County. She said many, if not most, cases go unreported. She said family and rela tionship violence includes ac tual or threatened physical harm, harassment, stalking, neglect and emotional abuse. Mary Elizabeth Herring J.D, an assistant professor in the College of Medicine and a member of the symposium committee, said isolation is an other type of spousal or rela tionship abuse. "Isolation is when a partner prevents the other from leav ing the home, and outlaws jobs, transportation and tele phone use,” Herring said. “It may be a control problem for the abuser. ” Herring said the confer ence should create a network between service providers and academic and research- oriented individuals in the community, in order to pro vide services and information to victims.
