The Aggies return to action at Reed Arena tonight at 7 p.m. against the University of Alabama. A Long Time Coming On Nov. 19, A&M traveled to Nacogdoches and defeated Stephen F. Austin University, 67-55. The win over the Lumberjacks marked the Ag gies’ first road victory since December 1996. The nearly 2-year-long, 19-game losing streak included the Aggies’ entire 1996-1997 conference road stretch and 1997-1998 road games. Cook Heats Up Clifton Cook, A&M’s junior point guard, has hit the ground running in his first year leading the Ag gies’ offense. Through his first four games with the Aggies, Cook averaged 14.5 points and 7.5 assists. His 14 assists against Centenary College left him one short of tying the A&M record for most assists in a game. The junior-college transfer has two double doubles this season and finished with a game- high 25 points in the Aggies’ losing effort against Oral Roberts. Welcome To The Big 12 Including tonight’s matchup with .Alabama, the Aggies have only six non-conference games re maining. First-year coach Melvin Watkins will get his first taste of conference action on Jan. 2 when the Aggies travel to Lawrence, Kan., to take on the University of Kansas. A&M’s second conference game, a Jan. 6 matchup with Oklahoma State University at Reed Arena, promises to be equally challenging. The Cowboys were picked by Big 12 coaches to win the conference. Will Shoot Free Throws For Food The Aggies made 69 of their 102 free-throw at tempts in their first four games. The 68-percent rate is not where Watkins said he would like it to be but is still a substantial im provement over last season when A&M shot 58 percent from the line. Watkins said the Aggies have shot “thousands and thousands” of free-throws in practice and jok ingly said he will take away their meal money if they shoot poorly from the line during games. A l Lazarus is a junior journalism major. priority, Jayhawks coach says (AP) — Bill Snyder does not un derstand the Bowl Championship Series standings and he will not bother to figure them out. The Kansas State coach’s only concern this week is trying to beat Texas A&M in the Big 12 champi onship Saturday. “We realize that that’s the only thing we have any kind of control over — and A&M certainly has an impact on that, too,” Snyder said during a confer ence call Monday. “We donT un derstand the sys tem and the nu ances, but we do understand that we’re not going to have any im pact on how that plays out. Our main concern is to do all we can to play well.” The Wildcats (11-0) are No. 1 in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll and No. 2 in The Associated Press poll. However, they are No. 3 in the poll that counts the most, the one from the BCS. In the BCS poll — which com bines both those polls, three com- SNYDER puter rankings, strength of schedule and record — being third means you are the first loser. The top two teams, currently Tennessee and UCLA, will play in the national championship Jan. 4. “It’s real frustrating,” said return specialist David Allen. “But we know if we win out something good might happen for us. So we’ve just got to keep on winning.” There are a few ways for Kansas State can still win a spot in the Fiesta Bowl. All scenarios begin with a vic tory over No. 10 Texas A&M (10-2). The second step would be an up set Saturday by either No. 23 Missis sippi State against No. 1 Tennessee in the SEC championship or Miami against No. 3 UCLA in a game rescheduled because of bad weather. Should the Volunteers and Bruins win, the Wildcats’ last hope would be that their victory is impressive enough to move them high enough in the computer rankings and polls to offset their weak schedule. Snyder admits he is clear on the scenarios — “It’s not that we’re oblivious to what’s going on,” he said — but he said he is not asking his players to try embarrassing A&M just for the sake of winning poll votes.
