Newman: Slipping
ratings secondary
NEW YORK (AP) — Kevin
Newman, the co-host of “Good
Morning America,” said his
wife’s diagnosis of multiple
sclerosis put his worries about
slipping ratings and replace
ment rumors in perspective.
“I don’t mean to belittle what
do, but it’s just TV,” Newman
said in the Dec. 5 issue of TV
Guide. “It’s not my real life.
What matters to me are the
people I love. If I can continue
sharing myself with the audi
ence, great. If not, I’m still a
whole person.”
Newman’s wife, Cathy, was
diagnosed with the chronic de
generative disorder in August.
“Right now, she is comfort
able,” he said.
Newman said he feels the
strain of rumors he may not
have his job for long as the rat
ings slide.
He said he has been told he
will stay through Christmas.
Asked about Newman’s fu
ture, ABC News president David
Westin said: “We look forward
to his continued contribution to
‘Good Morning America’ and all
ABC News programs.”
Canceled show
depresses Ellen
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ellen
DeGeneres says she went into
a deep depression after ABC
canceled her
show earlier
this year.
“ Everything
that I ever
feared hap

lost my show.
I’ve been at
tacked like hell.
I went from
making a lot of money on a sit
com to making no money,” she
said in Sunday’s Los Angeles
Times Magazine.
DeGeneres revealed her ho
mosexuality when her charac
ter on “Ellen” came out in
April 1997.

year later. DeGeneres and her
actress girlfriend, Anne Heche,
accuse the network of sabo
taging the sitcom and Holly
wood of treating them badly.
“When I walked out of the
studio after five years of work
ing so hard, knowing I had been
treated so disrespectfully for no
other reason than I was gay, I
just went into this deep, deep
depression,” DeGeneres said,
adding, “^nd it’s not like any
other networks have called.”
DeGeneres will appear in
three upcoming movies, includ
ing Goodbye Lover in December
and edTV, a new Ron Howard
comedy, next spring.
Heche appeared in Wag the
Dog, Six Days, Seven Nights and
co-stars in the upcoming Psy

Singer-songwriter
endures liver tumor
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) —
Singer-songwriter Janis Ian
says she needs surgery to re
move a benign liver tumor.
The tumor was discovered in
August, 10 days before she be
gan an Internet auction of mem
orabilia to raise money for a
memorial fund at her late moth
er’s alma mater, Goddard Col
lege in Plainfield, Vt.
The tumor is pressing on her
stomach and causing intense
abdominal pain, Ian said in a
statement last week.
No further details about the tu
mor or the surgery were released.
A call to her manager Monday
was not immediately returned.
Ian, 47, had her first hit in
1967 with “Society’s Child
(Baby I’ve Been Thinking)”.

Chocolate bars

Rukeyser has his very own can
dy bar.
A regional chain of 13
shops, Malley’s Chocolates, be

cently to raise money for chari

rice crisp concoction.
“I went to one of Rukeyser’s
seminars in Las Vegas a couple
of years ago and we thought it
would be fun to do a bar for
him,” said the company’s chair
man, Bill Malley.
Rukeyser’s show airs Fridays

Smith’s nightmare:
getting bad ratings
NEW YORK (AP) — According to
the rules of physics — and Holly
wood — everything that goes up
must come down.
So after a,string of career highs
— a hit TV show, two blockbuster
films and a multiplatinum rap ca
reer— Will Smith admits he’s a “lit
tle nervous” with the release of his
latest project, the thriller Enemy of
the State.
“I’m not missing too much,”
he said recently, as he sipped
coffee at an New York hotel.
“Film after film I’m scoring and
people are reacting well, so it’s
inevitable with any ups there are
going to be downs. I’m trying to
avoid them as much as I can.”
