A&Mstudents begin international bicycle-tour
BY MEREDITH MIGHT

D avid Mebane, a senior management
information systems business analy
sis major, is graduating in May, but
he won’t be heading to Houston or Dallas
to pursue a career in the corporate world.
Instead, he is going to Paris, France,
where he will be encouraging tourists to
“hop, skip and jump through Paris” with
Bullfrog Bike Tours, a bicycle touring com
pany he has founded.
The company will guide customers on a
four-hour trip to the tourist spots of the city
for $20.
The major attractions include the Eiffel
Tower, the Louvre, Notre Dame Cathedral
and Napoleon’s burial site, Les Invalides.
Mebane has spent the past three sum
mers in France as a tour guide, a student
and an intern.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to live and
work in France for all four years of college,”
he said.
“I’ve always wanted to do something fun.
This affords me the opportunity to live in
France and show others how much fun it
can be.”
Mebane worked at Price Waterhouse
Coopers last summer doing computer soft
ware implementation but found it was not
the job for him.
“I decided that looking at a computer
screen was not something I wanted to do for
the rest of my life,” he said.“I saw this as a
golden opportunity.
“Bicycle tours have had a lot of success
in other cities, so I don’t see why it could
n’t be successful in Paris. I have a passion
for France. This is a paid vacation.”
Mebane said he is planning on being in
business only during the summer months
for the next three or four years.
Mebane, who speaks some French but is
not fluent, made a three-hour presentation
to the Paris Chamber of Commerce before-
setting up the business.
The start-up cost for the business was
about $20,000, most of which was financed
through a loan.
The company is based in the United
States to avoid the high taxes abroad.
The Paris location is a branch of the
company.
Mebane will employ three people to help
lead the tours of 25 people. His employees
include his roommate, David Faulkner, a se
nior finance major.
Faulkner said he is looking forward to
spending the summer in France.
“I’m really excited about the experience,”
Faulker said.
“I didn’t want to go into the workforce af
ter graduation. This was a good opportuni
ty to do something different and unique that
other students don’t get to do.”

A Bug's /.//e squashes Babe: Pig in the City at Box OP
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The
expensive sequel Babe: Pig in
the City flopped at the Thanks

showed Monday.
Produced for more than $90 mil
lion, Pig in the City grossed just
$8.2 million over the five-day
weekend for a disastrous fifth-
place debut. Its dismal perfor
mance came as Universal’s parent
Seagram Co. ousted film division
chief Casey Silver.
A Bug’s Life, meanwhile, did
stellar business, grossing $45.7
million to lead the North Amer
ican box office, while The Rn-
grats Movie collected $27.4 mil
lion for second and Enemy of
the State had $25.9 million for
third. The Waterboy was fourth
with $19.6 million.
Universal’s other recenu |
