He set numerous records during the game. He sur passed Navy’s Napolean McCallum’s all-purpose yardage record of 7,172, finishing his career with 7,206 yards. Williams also passed the 2,000-yard mark in rushing yardage for the season with 2,124 yards, only the eighth player in NCAA history to do so. “He [Williams] is one of the best, or one of them,” Texas coach Mack Brown said. “It was time for him to step up, and he did it against the No. 2 defense in the country. “He had a huge day. The Heisman voters could see that. I’ve never seen a performance like Ricky’s today.” After the record-breaking run, Williams trotted to the sideline to celebrate with his teammates. Howev er, Williams joked the experience nearly proved fatal. “I couldn’t breathe,” he said. “I was trying to say help, but I couldn’t get anything out.” The Longhorns’ celebration might have been prema ture for their soon-to-be football icon. Williams fumbled the ball twice, both setting up short A&M touchdown drives that nearly cost Texas the game. “I told Ricky to forget about the fumbles,” Brown said. “What was I going to do? Yell at him?” “With this game, we should have scored a couple more touchdowns,” Williams said. “We had the ball the whole game. I wouldn’t be here [the interview room] right now if we had lost. I told them it was my fault.” Even after Williams’ record-setting day, his run ning is not over. The NFL? Not even close. Long- Football Continued from P(i$e' mike PUENTES/ 1 ! Even Royal was seen with a wig of dreadlocks in a UT video presentation during the game, How ever, Williams did not seem pleased about parting with a strand of his hair. “If they can catch me!” Keep running. “Our defense proving since the first year,” UT linebackerDi fro said, “and hadgottetls weeks past. “We held them to rushing. That’s a crej Coach Reese.” Williams said he agree; “The defense playedoi today,” Williams said. "They should have the standing ovation, not me.” During the last seven games be tween A&M and Texas, the Long horns defense lowered their rushing yards allowed ft to 131.2 and their passii lowed from 268.3 to 206! In the process, UTsopptj scoring dropped from44, to 24.2.
