HELIFE, F
Williams
Continued from Page 7
“[Fullback] Ricky [Brown] led great, and I got a
great block from [receiver] Wane [McGarity] down-
field, and the rest was easy.”
While it was a tough scamper down the left side of
the field, it was the key block of McGarity that sprung
Williams for the score.
“I just got in front of that guy and kept him from
catching Ricky,” McGarity said. “If he didn’t score, I’d
have been pretty upset.”
Williams’ historical run did not end on that play.
He set numerous records during the game. He sur
passed Navy’s Napolean McCallum’s all-purpose
yardage record of 7,172, finishing his career with 7,206
yards. Williams also passed the 2,000-yard mark in
rushing yardage for the season with 2,124 yards, only
the eighth player in NCAA history to do so.
“He [Williams] is one of the best, or one of them,”
Texas coach Mack Brown said. “It was time for him
to step up, and he did it against the No. 2 defense in
the country.
“He had a huge day. The Heisman voters could see
that. I’ve never seen a performance like Ricky’s today.”
After the record-breaking run, Williams trotted to
the sideline to celebrate with his teammates. Howev
er, Williams joked the experience nearly proved fatal.
“I couldn’t breathe,” he said. “I was trying to say
help, but I couldn’t get anything out.”
The Longhorns’ celebration might have been prema
ture for their soon-to-be football icon. Williams fumbled
the ball twice, both setting up short A&M touchdown
drives that nearly cost Texas the game.
“I told Ricky to forget about the fumbles,” Brown
said. “What was I going to do? Yell at him?”
“With this game, we should have scored a couple
more touchdowns,” Williams said. “We had the ball the
whole game. I wouldn’t be here [the interview room]
right now if we had lost. I told them it was my fault.”
Even after Williams’ record-setting day, his run
ning is not over. The NFL? Not even close. Long-

horns offensive linemen say they want a lock of
Williams’ hair, which has become legendary, as a

in a UT video presentation during the game, How
ever, Williams did not seem pleased about parting
with a strand of his hair.
