The Brazos Valley chapter
of MADD operates with a staff
of three and has a membership
of 350.
However, most MADD chap
ters across the state have mem
berships of 700 or more.
A portion of the awareness
campaign is geared towards in
creasing the safety efforts of
people attending parties where
alcohol is served.
MADD advises individuals
hosting parties to:
• Serve high-protein food if
alcohol is being served, and of
fer non-alcoholic beverages.
• Use non-alcoholic drink
recipes available at the Brazos
Valley MADD or Allstate office.
• Do not let guests mix
drinks, and close the bar 90
minutes before the party ends.
• Encourage guests to desig
nate a driver or offer alternative
transportation.
• Offer alternative trans
portation.
• Report suspected drunken
drivers immediately to area po
lice from a car phone or pay
phone.
• Call DPS at 1-800-525-5555
or call 775-TIPS to report a
drunken driver or to ask ques
tions.
For more information about
the Brazos Valley chapter of
MADD call 823-7008.
“It is the perfect time to have a shoe
drive when kids are going back to
school,” Lewis said. “Instead of having
a community-service event off cam
pus, we’ll bring the community service
to A&M.”
Strope said the coats and blankets
donated to Twin City Missions will be
given away Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. to 4
p.m. to the homeless population at the
mission first and then to the needy in
the community who are slightly above
or below the poverty line.

THE 170-HOUR RULE
New legislation approved by the 75th Texas
Legislature provides that resident undergraduate
students who have attempted in excess of 170 hours
at Texas state institutions of higher education may be
required to pay the non-resident tuition rate beginning
Fall 1999. There are several exceptions to this law that
the University is investigating. If you are in jeopardy of
exceeding the 170-hour limit and subject to paying the
higher tuition rate, you will receive a written notice
from Texas A8JV\ University. The higher tuition rate
will not go into effect until the Fall 1999 semester.
