With a new arena, a new coach
and new uniforms on Friday night,
the Texas A&M Men’s Basketball
Team probably did not need further
outside assistance in its effort to
open a new era of Aggie basketball
with a win.
But the Aggies got it anyway, in
the form of a hapless opponent —
the University of North Texas —
that shot 30 percent from the field,
20 percent from the free-throw line
and had a roster sporting only one
player with Division 1 experience.
These factors — and a crowd of
6, 511, the second-largest non-con
ference crowd in A&M history —
combined to help the Aggies (1-0,
0-0) to a 80-59 victory over the Ea
gles (0-1, 0-0).
“With that many people out
there,” senior forward Shanne
Jones said, “I thought we ran out
into the wrong gym.”
Aggie fans may have also
thought they were at the wrong
place, as the home team shot 76
percent from the free-throw line, in
cluding a 9-9 effort in the first half.
A&M coach Melvin Watkins said
the Aggies have been shooting
“thousands and thousands” of free-
throws in practice.
“If you shoot more of them [in
practice!, you better hit them,” he
said with a grin. “Or we’ll take
away your meal money.”
The Aggies received their usual
boost from Jones, who led all scor
ers with 25 points on 10-12 shooting.
Junior-college transfers Clifton
Cook and Paul Jacobs were also in
double figures for the Aggies, with
12 and 10 points, respectively. Both
posted double-doubles in their first
game with the Aggies, with Cook
dishing-out 10 assists and Jacobs
pulling-down 10 rebounds.
Though the crowd of 6,511 did
not look very impressive at 12,500
seat Reed Arena, a few raucous
ovations for the Aggies promised of
things to come.
“We felt the roar tonight,”
Watkins said. “We just have to
make sure [Reed Arena! is secure,
so we don’t rock it from side to side
when the crowds get larger."
The Aggies jumped to a 45-31
halftime lead, thanks to 55 per
cent shooting on their part, but
more importantly, 28 percent
from the Eagles, who missed 24 of
their first 27 shots.
UNT coach Vic TTilli expressed
his dismay with his young team’s
lackluster effort.
“You just can’t shoot like that,
not at this level,” he said. “We did
n’t set up tonight. We just stopped
and shot the ball.”

Ohio State University linebacker Andy Katzen-
moyer, last year s Butkus winner, is ESPN’s favorite
for the Lombardi. But Nguyen, unlike Katzenmoyer,
comes up big in big games. Nguyen had 20 tackles
against UCLA in the Cotton Bowl last season.
Katzenmoyer had four tackles in Michigan State
University’s upset victory over the Buckeyes.
“He’d [Nguyen] make a grbat anything. He’s going
to get a chance to play pro football, and I’d be willing
to bet he makes it, Slocum said. “But whatever hap-
pens he will be a successful guy. He has all the quali
ties that make for a successful person. Whatever he
chooses to do, he will find a way to be successful at it.”
