Sophomore Casey Cronin shot a
pair of 76s down the stretch to go
along with an opening-round 73,
tying for 47th in the tournament.
True freshman Sean Gilliland
had another consistent perfor

along the way.
Senior Matt Welch shot a final-
round 74 to overcome first- and
second-round scores of 80 to finish
79th with a 234.
A three-round total of 244
placed sophomore Clay Fullick
90th in the tournament, following
rounds of 84, 82 and 78.
The Palmetto Dunes tourna
ment marked the end of an incon
sistent fall season for the Aggies.
A&M struggled with 18th and
12th place finishes in their first two
tournaments, but bounced back
with strong showings at the Red
River Classic, placing 10th amongst
a strong field and
9th at the Baylor
Intercollegiate
two weeks later.
Palmer, fol
lowing a summer
in which he com
peted in the U.S.
Open, led the Ag
gies in scoring palmer
average with a
73.21 and had a team-best eighth-
place finish at the Windon Memo
rial Classic in early October.
Cronin showed his talent, fin
ishing second on the team with a
74.55 scoring average, and led the
Aggies at the Red River Classic with
a 25th-place finish.
Cronin, along with Palmer,
shot a team-best 4-under-par 68 at
the event.
The surprise of the fall season
was the play of true freshman
Sean Gilliland.
The Killeen native finished
third on the team with a 76.00
scoring average competing in four
of the five fall events, including a
top 25 performance at the Baylor
Intercollegiate.
Junior Lee Reed finished with a
76.72, placing him fourth on the
team in scoring average.
Reed struggled late in the
season with final rounds of 79
at the Red River Classic and
Baylor Intercollegiate.
Rounding out the top-five
scoring leaders for the Aggies
was Welch who posted a 77.36
over 11 rounds.

players in the state of Texas.
Looking around the confer
ence, some of the top players
are defectors from the Lone
Star State. Kansas State Univer
sity quarterback and Heisman
candidate Michael Bishop went
to Blinn College where he won
two consecutive junior-college
national championships.
Wildcats linebacker and Butkus semifinal
ist Jeff Kelly hails from LaGrange, Texas.
University of Nebraska safety Clint Finley
posted his first two interceptions of the season
against Iowa State University after an injury-
plagued first half for the Cuero, Texas, native.
NU also claimed placekicker Kris Brown
from Southlake, Texas, and cornerback Joe
Walker from Arlington.
Blowin’ in the Winbush
University of Kansas running back David
Winbush has been a breath of fresh air for
coach Terry Allen this season.
After single-handedly carrying the Jay-
hawks to victory against the University of
Colorado with more than 200 yards rushing,
Winbush posted his second triple-digit per
formance of the year by running through
the University of North Texas defense for
131 yards in a 23-14 victory.
Winbush needs only 94 yards in KU’s final
game against Iowa State to eclipse the 1,000-
yard mark for the season..
Best back this side of Barry
The magic number is 204. That is how
many yards UT’s Williams needs to pass Tony
Dorsett’s NCAA Division IA career rushing
record. Texas faces Texas Tech University and
A&M, two tough rushing defenses.
Other Williams records (or soon-to-be
records):
• Williams’ two touchdowns against Okla
homa State University marked his 21st game
with two or more touchdowns. It broke the
NCAA record set by Anthony Thompson.
