Wehner tests new parking system
BY MEGAN WRIGHT
The Battalion
On Nov. 2, the pay lot at Wehn
er Business Administration Build
ing adopted a temporary prorated
parking system. The trial will last
until the end of the semester when
it will then be decided if the pro
rated fee will be applied at addi
tional parking areas on campus.
During the Nov. 4 meeting, the
Student Senate passed a bill, au
thored by Peter Schulte, a junior
business major, enacting the parking
trial run as emergency legislation.
“I was working with PTTS (De
partment of Parking, Traffic and
T-ansportation Services) last se
mester and I finally got Sherri
Wines and Doug Williams, Associ
ate Directors of PTTS, to do a trial
run,” Schulte, chair of the parking
sub-committee, said. “They agreed
to try it, and the main focus was
Wehner to start with because a lot
of students park there for their
class. If they are waiting in line to
“It was great to listen

pay and it goes over the hour, that
is another dollar they have to pay.”
Currently, the prorated rates at
Wehner are one dollar for the first
hour and 25 cents for each addi
tional 15 minutes.
“I thought the committee should
try it, but the main concern for PTTS
was the fiscal impact,” Schulte said.
“It was a concern for them that they
wouldn’t have that extra money, but
I think that the, difference will be
made up because more students
would be willing to park in the lot.”
Schulte said the process has been
relatively easy because PTTS was
very receptive to student input. Re
actions from students so far, accord
ing to Schulte, have been positive.
“It was great to listen to student
reactions because Senate was ac
tually saving students money,”
Schulte said.
The final decision about parking
will be made by administrators of
PTTS at the end of the semester.
“The system will remain like it
is until the end of this semester,”
Schulte said. “Then, PTTS will
evaluate how much they projected
to have for parking and how much
did come in.”
Lecture series to examine U.S. wars
University of Texas professor to discuss military's impact on foreign relations
BY MELISSA JORDAN
The Battalion
Dr. Robert Divine will con
duct a lecture series this week
on “War, Peace and the United
States in the 20th Century” that
will highlight U.S. war involve
ment in the 20th century and
how it will affect foreign rela
tions in the 21st century.
H. W. Brands, professor of
history, said Divine will speak
tonight about the United States’
entrance into wars and how the
United States has conducted it
self during times of war.
Thursday’s lecture will dis
cuss how the United States has
made peace in the wake of war
and what this means for future
foreign relations.
Brands said the lectures will
give attendees a better under
standing of the efforts the Unit
ed States has undertaken in the
20th century to preserve peace
around the world.
“They’ll (participants) get a
perspective on history,” Brands
said. “And it will give them a
perspective on what they can
expect in U.S. foreign affairs in
the 21st century.”
Terry Anderson, professor of
history, said lecture attendants
will gain insight into the role of
American presidents in promot
ing world peace.
“The president is the one who
is going to be negotiating the
peace process,” Anderson said.
Brands, a former student of Di
vine, said Divine has taught histo
ry at the University of Texas for 40
years and is among the most well-
known American historians.
“He is one of the most distin
guished, diplomatic historians in
the country,” Brands said.
Anderson said Divine has
written a number of books
about the American history in
the 20th Century.
“He is one of the leading histo
rians of modern America,” Ander
son said. “It’s a pleasure to have a
man of his stature at Texas A&M.”
The lectures will be held in
601 Rudder Tower at 5:30 p.m. to
day through Thursday and will
include a short question-and-an-
swer period after each lecture.
