CHARLES LEWIS Clubs Continued from Page 3 Munoz said the organization is very diverse in its makeup. “We’re known as the social committee for people who don’t like social committees,” Munoz said. “We’re very diverse from the regular ‘Joe Aggie’ to the two per center sitting next to him. We’re all bound by the fact that we all like science fiction and fantasy. ” The club is very laid back, Munoz said, and it stems from the personalities of the members. For example, the number of members who pay dues is 40, while as many as 70 regularly at- I tend the meetings. Those serving as members of one group are likely to join the other two. Several Cepheid Vari able members are also a part of Academic Vampirica, a fan club promoting the literature, films and other mediums of the goth ic/horror genre. Shane Wells, president of Academic Vampirica and a se nior psychology and philoso phy major, said the organiza tion was started four years ago for fans of the gothic and hor ror genres, and has a member ship of 40 members. “We’ve become a lot more in the past four years,” he said. “Now we’re more of an umbrella organization for groups that want to do live-action role playing.” The group has recently be come a part of Camarilla, a na tional group that promotes LARPS (Live Action Role Play ing games). “Live action role playing is kind of like improv theater,” Wells said. “Members make up character^ and improvise on them in ongoing storylines. We try to stress depth in characteri zation to make it more interest ing and fun.” The types of games typically played involve the four classes of Vampire, Werewolf, Wraith and Changeling (fairies). A basic rule system is set up for the games, and the rest cre ates itself. Character conflicts such as combat, debates or simple argu ments are solved by ’’paper- rock-scissors.” Along with hosting its own games, Academie Vampirica co programs with NOVA and Cepheid Variable. It hosts competition games at AggieCon, NovaCon and WarCon each year. The interconnection of student organizations at A&M helps clubs offer the student body better pro grams, as well as creating closer connections between the clubs and its members. The diverse student body of Texas A&M is represented through clubs such as these and the creativity and originality of its members. HEY 2002!
