Cowboy Mouth promotes latest CD tonight
BY MANISHA PAREKH
The Battalion
T he musical hurricane that is Cow
boy Mouth is returning to College
Station tonight in support of its lat
est release, Mercylond.
The New Orleans-based quartet is
comprised of drummer Fred LeBlanc,
rhythm guitarist Paul Sanchez, guitarist
and keyboardist John Thomas Griffith
and bassist Rob Savoy.
The band draws its name from the
line in Sam Shepard’s play, “Cowboy
Mouth” that read: “You need to be a rock
‘n’ roll Jesus with a cowboy mouth.”
Cowboy Mouth was formed seven
years ago by the four veteran perform
ers, each bringing his own unique style
to the band.
Savoy said the resulting sound is hard
to describe but easy to listen to.
“It’s a hodgepodge, a gumbo, of dif
ferent sounds,” Savoy said, “rock, R&B,
blues, country, gospel and soul. All of us
had various journeys in different bands
to get to this point. Everybody’s individ
ual ability makes the sum of the parts. ”
The band’s journey has included the
release of three independent albums. Are
Yon With Me? (1996) brought the band
national exposure with the release of
“Jenny Says” and was the first album on
the MCA label — Mercylond is the
band’s second MCA release.
Savoy said the making of Mercylond
was a different kind of musical journey
for the band.
“[It] was a chance to stretch out on a
lot of levels,” he said. “We had more
time, more money and a great producer,
Michael Barbiero. He took the sound to
a new level.”
Savoy said Barbiero tried to hone in
on each member’s individual talents and
use them to the fullest degree.
“He figured out each guy’s forte and
tapped into that and brought the music
to a higher level,” Savoy said. “He gave
everybody a piece of the music.
“Griff [John Thomas Griffith] is a
great multi-instrumentalist. His soul
shines through on every instrument he
touches. Fred is a great singer and a great
drummer, and Michael [Barbiero] got
him to sing instead of scream. Paul has
a wonderful voice and touch of guitar,
and that gets lost. ”
Savoy said he also benefited from
Barbiero’s direction and was able to sing
lead on more songs, and he is proud of
this album because everyone had a hand
in making it.
“Everybody is represented on the al
bum, “ he said. “People will know it is
four people, not one or two.”

Cowboy Mouth
Savoy gave much of the credit for the
band’s success to sheer perseverance.
“[We] refused to give up,” he said.
“We’ve been playing 15 to 20 years, and
it’s a very crippling business, but we’ve
continued to go on. ”
Savoy said the band must also give
credit to its fans.
“We don’t owe our success to the
record company,” he said. “We owe it to
the people who come to our shows.”
Cowboy Mouth’s energy can be seen
at its shows. Many performances include
LeBlanc climbing on speakers or rush
ing into the audience. The audience is
also urged to “let it go.”
Savoy said Cowboy Mouth wishes to
get the audience involved at concerts.
“Basically, [we are trying to] make
the audience feel like they’re on
stage,” he said. “It’s not just us. The
audience is a part of it. [We] just get
everybody involved.”
“Unlike some trends that have
come back and never should
have, this is a good revival.”
Hinojosa said she enjoys
both the music and dancing of
this trend.
“I really enjoy the music be
cause it is fun and upbeat and
different than the country/alter
native music monotony that I
am use to,” she said. “As a
dancer, this type of partner
dancing interests me, and 1 am
very eager to learn how. ”
The Swing trend is very dif
ferent from the flannel and jeans
attire of the grunge scene a few
years ago — it is colorful.
Male Swing-lounge patrons
are clad in brightly colored zoot
suits with fedoras and black-
and-white wingtip shoes.
Women are dressed in
short, flowing skirts and
leather-soled shoes.
Hinojosa said the Swing
trend brings a certain attitude
with it that helps make Swing
ing very popular.
“From the way people dress
in colorful zoot suits to the
slang and dancing, there is a
certain attitude,” she said.
“You cannot be timid with the
dancing, so you have to have
this attitude to make it fun. I
think it is a big part in why the
Swing scene is so popular."
Brad Brown, a junior indus
trial distribution major, said
there is a variety of reasons why
Swing is back.
“The music is a big reason
this trend is here,” Brown said.
“It is upbeat and jazzy and gen
erally gets you in a good mood. ”
The music is different, but
has a combination of punk and
ska that have helped with its
popularity, Brown said.
“We have moved from
Green Day to the Mighty,
Mighty Bosstones to now vari
ous Swing artists like Royal
Crown Revue,” he said. “Along
with this and the popularity of
the movie Swingers, this trend
has come back.”
Swing has definitely become
a new way for people to express
themselves in a positive fashion.
From zoot suits, cocktails and
jitterbugging, this culture and
music is something that could
stay in the spotlight.
The Swing movement could
be best summed up by
Nicholas Hope, who con
tributed a comment to the New
Swing Movement Website.
“Swing is so much more than
a dance, it’s a way of life,” Hope
said. “The music gets stuck in
your mind, and the dance is in
your heart, and the whole scene
is engraved on your soul. You
can fly. ”
