Writing Center offers advice for
student, faculty compositions
BY MELISSA JORDAN
The Battalion
The Department of Eng
lish Writing Center is a re
source available to students
and faculty to provide free,
client-centered writing help.
Dr. Chris Holcomb, coor
dinator of the Writing Center
and an assistant English pro
fessor, said in a Writing Cen
ter brochure the primary mis
sion of the Writing Center is
to provide a risk-free, friend
ly environment where stu
dents, faculty and staff can
meet with trained consul
tants and talk about writing.
Holcomb said over 600
clients have visited the
Writing Center this semes
ter, which is staffed by 10
graduate students in the
English department.
Dr. Valerie Balester, direc
tor of writing programs in
the English department, said
both students and faculty
need someone to view their
writing.
“I think that every writer
needs an audience that can
talk back to them,” she said.
Balester said she would
encourage students to bring
real-life writing, such as re
sumes and job applications
to the Writing Center.
“I would remind students
that it’s free, and it’s staffed
by professional writers to
help them,” Balester said.
Laura Carroll, a graduate
student in English, said the
Writing Center allows stu
dents to present ideas to an
experienced writer.
“It’s kind of like taking it
to your roommate, but it’s
someone with a lot of [writ
ing] experience,” she said.
Carroll said the consul
tants at the center can help at
any stage of the writing
process. She said students
can bring in their assign
ments before they begin writ
ing and receive help getting
started on the assignment.
Holcomb said the center
is student-oriented.
“We adapt to the student,”
he said. “The student doesn’t
have to conform to us.”
Holcomb said he hopes
the Writing Center will be
come a place where stu
dents and faculty of all dis
ciplines can talk about
writing concerns.
“I hope that someday it
will truly be a University
wide writing center,” Hol
comb said.
The Writing Center is lo
cated in 249 Blocker Build
ing and is open five days a
week. No more than a day in
advance is usually needed
for an appointment, and
clients may also visit the
center on a walk-in basis if
consultants are available.
