The Taiwan endowment was recognized at a luncheon hosted by Texas A&M University President Dr. Ray M. Bowen. David Liu, the director-general of the Taipei Economic and Cultur al Office in Houston, represented the government of Taiwan as the guest of honor. At the luncheon, Liu was pre sented with gifts from Bowen and Dr. Don Wilson, executive director for the George Bush Presidential Li brary Foundation. Bowen said A&M is pleased to be the recipient of the endowment. Dr: Emily Yuang Ashworth, as sistant provost for international programs, said the funds from the endowment will provide sup plemental stipends for students who wish to study language or participate in internships in Tai wan and support programs to promote better cultural under standing between Taiwan and the Basi United States. Ashworth said in _ Ronald G. Douglas, executiven: lustration B president and provost, visi Taipei to strengthen relations) tween the two countries. “As a result, in January 1999, two teams of Taiwaneses!! entists will participate in colli rative research with Texas A agricultural biotechnology,hJ ardous material mitigations computer science,” Ashwor said. “Also, faculty and stude exchanges between the compui science departments of Tex A&M and National Tsing University, a premier engineerii and science museum in Taiwai are being discussed.” Douglas, in a speech at the In cheon, said the endowment« provide opportunities to increa; international perspectives ofot students and faculty. “This will occur by developic mutually beneficial academic change and collaborative reseaic programs between Texas A&M at institutions in Taiwan,” he said. Lt. Chris Farris of the BPD said the online crime-reporting system was implemented as a suggestion from meetings with the Interna tional Student Association. He said some students feel more comfortable informing police over the Internet rather than in person. Farris said the online reports are informal reports for BPD to follow up on, but more informa tion will be required to prosecute a person. Officer Jerry Moore, a crime prevention officer, said people should not report emergencies or situations requiring immediate assistance online. “The Website does not get checked frequently [enough to handle emergencies],” Moore said. “If someone requires im mediate assistance, their best bel would be to call the police.” Moore said some examples of things that could be reported over Internet are ongoing com munity problems and crime tips. The Website was up for a week as of last Friday. Moore said there have been three criminal com plaints filed. He said the low num ber of complaints was expected be cause the Internet is not typically thought of as a means to report crime and not everyone has access to the Internet. Moore said the online crime re porting system will be down for the next few weeks because BPD is working on how it will route and track this information and related to national statistic agencies. The Website for BPD is opera tional. Those wishing to access the site can at http://ci.Bryan.tx.us /police/ doc/intake.html. From there, people can e-mail the police. A link to the crime-reporting sys tem will be available from the home page when it is operational. ighting Dr. J.
