The Battaltle Battalioi
Center offers students academic help
BY NONI SRIDHARA
The Battalion
Center for Academic Enhancement
(CAEN), located in 529 Blocker, holds
valuable academic resources available
free of charge to students.
CAEN is open Monday to Friday
from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and pro
vides help for students who are try
ing to improve grades, raise their
scores on standardized tests or get
extra help in classes.
One main feature of CAEN is sup
plemental instruction (SI) sessions.
These sessions usually take place
three times a week and enforce
whatever material has been covered
in class.
Another feature of CAEN is the in
dependent study lab. Here students
can use computerized programs to
prepare for tests such as the GRE,
GMAT and LSAT. Students can also
prepare for credit by exam tests at
this study lab. In addition to the com
puterized programs, there are book
supplements students can use while
they are in the lab.
Catherine Toler, assistant director
of CAEN, said CAEN also conducts re
view sessions for standardized tests,
which are announced in the All-Uni
versity Calendar and through fliers.
CAEN also offers courses for cred
it hours. These' courses include
CAEN 101 “Succeeding in College”
and CAEN 102 “Career Awareness.”
Eric W. Trekell, a lecturer for
CAEN, said the majority of people
enrolled in these courses are fresh
men or students who are on acade
mic probation. Trekell said many
students enrolled during the sum
mer take part in the provisional pro
gram, which allows students who
did not originally get accepted into
A&M to take classes;'if they do well
in the courses they will be granted
admission to the University.
Ttekell said there are four main
points that are focused on in CAEN 101.
“We mainly stress skills which will
help benefit them academically,”
Ttekell said. “The four main ones are
time management concepts, how to
read textbooks more effectively, how to
listen better in class and how to prepare
better for tests.”
Another service provided by
CAEN is the Academic Assistance
Clearinghouse Database. This data
base allows students to access all re
view sessions, SI schedules and e-
mail addresses for departments.
This database also provides online
math tutoring, as well as links to
preparation materials for standard
ized tests. In addition, the database
allows students access to grade dis
tribution reports and faculty evalu
ations by students.
Students can view the database by
accessing the CAEN homepage at
http://www. tamu.edu/aac/.
