“This issue has even been found to be
prominent in the racial-climate study con
ducted earlier this year. We don’t want to
lose out on anybody’s views in deciding what
to do. We really would like to see this take off
in the right direction and [be] decided on as
quickly and efficiently as possible.”
Adrienne Ballare, president of the local
chapter of the National Association for the
Advancement of Colored People and a ju
nior journalism major, said the issue of get
ting a tribute to diversity as a whole has
been a slow process.
“Personally, 1 haven’t seen anything be
ing accomplished,” Bellare said. “The
process to recognize diversity has been go
ing on for three or four years and it is drag
ging along.”
Bellare said decision makers are not giv
ing the idea of a statue honoring former Sen
ator Matthew Gaines enough serious con
templation.
“1 think it is sad because they don’t want
to recognize Matthew Gaines because he is
a minority,” she said. “It seems like they are
thinking of their image and what alumni
might think. While we should be drifting to
wards celebrating diversity, it seems like we
are drifting away from truly recognizing it
to save face. ”
