Texas A&M Varsity
Tennis Center ranks
as one of nation’s best
BY JASON LINCOLN
AND JEFF WEBB
The Battalion
The Texas A&M Men’s
Tennis Team opened Big 12
Conference play on Oct. 9
against Nebraska, winning its
doubles matches 6-1.
However, Big 12 play is
not all the Aggies opened.
The match with the Corn-
huskers also marked the first
ever event at the Texas A&M
Varsity Tennis Center.
A&M Men’s Tennis coach
Tim Cass said the new center
offers intimate seating for ap
proximately 1,500 fans.
“The facility came out ter
rific,” Cass said. “It was really
great for the people.
“I think it’s really going to
be a good environment as the
year goes on and hopefully in
the next couple of years.”
The center has 12 courts and
is able to accommodate both
men’s and women’s teams’
dual matches at the same time.
The facility will be home to
the 1999 Big 12 Championships.
Sophomore Shuon Madden
won his first Big 12 match of
the year, 6-4, 6-4, against Ne
braska and said players love
the new center.
“The school did an amaz
ing job building this facility,”
he said. “It’s probably one of
the best in the country right
now. It’s great that we were
able to take advantage of it.”
The center houses coaches
offices, men’s and women’s
locker rooms for the varsity ten
nis teams, a meeting room and
a training room.
“It’s an exciting time for
our program and the women’s
program at Texas A&M Uni
versity,” Cass said.
