While many Hollywood bigwigs may con sider a decade gap between movie projects to be an insurmountable obstacle, all the rules are thrown out the door when the actress is Oprah Winfrey. Beloved marks Winfrey’s return to the screen with a Pulitzer-winning novel by Toni Morrison. The adaptation is a vision of rare complexity and haunting imagery. While Winfrey’s performance in Beloved occasionally lacks emotional continuity, it is amazing to see how she surrenders herself to the part of Sethe, a runaway slave living in Ohio. Glover gives the film a sense of stability it otherwise would have lacked as Paul D. The emotional revelations of Beloved come from the newcomers Thandie Newton and Kimberly Elise. Newton plays the mysterious Beloved and Elise plays Sethe’s emotionally- stunted daughter Denver. The film deals with ghosts and the super natural and while most directors would give these ghosts a sense of fear or terror, Demme’s direction draws out the quiet sad ness of a tortured soul with flashbacks that are yellow with age but bellow the agony of slavery and loss. Sure to be a favorite among Oscar voters next March, Beloved vividly brings to life one of America’s most-revered authors. (Grade: A-) — A awn Meier Practical Magic Starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman Directed by Griffen Dunne Rated PG-1 3 Playing at Hollywood 16 Practical Magic is a fun movie based on Al ice Hoffman’s novel that tells the story of two New England sisters, Sally (Bullock) and Gillian (Kidman), and the trials of their lives. These two sisters add a twist to the story — they are witches who come from a long line of witches starting from the days of the Puritans. From casting spells to gaining acceptance of their hometown, these sisters have little life adventures throughout the movie. This is a fun movie and is something to see when audiences are not looking too hard. The plot is easy to follow and the fairly good, until the last 30 minutes movie when the writers seem tie up all the small subplots. Overall, it is worth the two hours.(tai PHOTO COURTESY OF TOUCHSTOl Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover star in Beloved, which is based on Toni Morrison'scritia( claimed novel. enlighten • entertain • inspire Steve Ogden is a good friend end an etlective senator.
