Blues tour coming to Rudder Au
ditorium will be a great perfor
mance, and audiences should ex
pect a lot of energy.
“OPAS is trying to expand what
students think the performing arts
includes, and this performance is
something you probably would not
see on public television,” she said.
“Audiences should be prepared to
see an exciting show and a night of
amazing music.”
The Highway 61 tour features the
Blind Boys of Alabama, Billy Boy
Arnold, John Hammond and Book
er T. Jones. Gospel, Chicago blues
and a mix of rhythm and blues and
pop sounds will fill Rudder Audito
rium with this performance.
Hammond has spent more than
30 years entertaining blues, folk
and rock fans around the world.
He has performed in a variety
of locations.
Hammond is famous for the
sounds he creates, and his combi
nation of acoustic and steel guitars
and harmonicas has helped him
become one of the premier blues
artists of his time.
Jones, an R&B and pop musician
has been involved with music since
a very early age. Jones has recorded
some of the most important records
in the history of the blues.
Mary Kay Creel, an OPAS oper
ations manager, said this perfor
mance adds diversity to the OPAS
Season 26.
“We brought this show to
Bryan-College Station because it is
unlike anything else OPAS is pre
senting this season,” Creel said.
“We wanted to take OPAS into the
future of the performing arts.
“This performance brings a
type of music that will broaden
students’ experiences with the
performing arts. We can bring
symphonies or musicals, but this
is different.”
Robbie Thomas, chair of the
OPAS student committee, said au
diences can expect a good blues
show with a variety of performers.
“The student reaction should be
good for this show,” Thomas said.
“This show brings different cultur
al roots to the performing arts.”
Thomas said the Highway 61
performance is one that makes this
OPAS season unique.
