Almost all students can be seen with it and ' drinking from it. The biggest fashion statement to hit the scene is bottled water. In the state of Texas alone, 343 million gal lons of bottled water were sold in 1997, enough for every Texan to have consumed 11.6 gallons of bot tled water each. However, debates have sprung up whether bottled water is authentic or whether tap water is still reliable. MIKE FUENTES/The Battalion Cohen said one diet standby, the water diet (also the “noth ing but fruit” diet), is an invitation to trouble. “A body requires a certain amount of calories to function cor rectly,” Cohen said. “If your caloric intake drops too low, your body begins to think you’re in a starvation situation and holds onto as many calories as it can.” Cohen said the pounds a student loses on a fad diet often come right back because there is no real weight loss. “You may be just losing water,” she said. “Carbohydrates hold water, and when they’re burned, you lose water. Also, if you don’t get the proper nutrition in your diet, your body will begin breaking down fat-burning muscle to make up for the lost nutrients.” Another familiar dieting pattern is the ever popular yo-yo diet. Cohen said it is not unheard of for these diets to land the di eter in medical trouble. see Vanity on Page 4, Needs for the Body Be it a bottled water company or the municipal water source, they all agree about the essential part water plays in the body. Amy Chapman, a lecturer and di rector of dietetic internships in the human nutrition section of the De partment of Animal Science, said water is not needed to attain miner als or vitamins but serves a bigger purpose for the body. “All water is needed for the bio chemical process,” she said. “That is what it is made for. It helps for things like digestion and excretion. “A healthy person needs about 35 milliliters per kilogram of body : weight. An average female would need two liters, and an average male fei would need three liters of water. ” Michael Neuwirth, corporate communication director for Evian National Spring Water, said both tap water and bottle water do one job very well — hydration. “Hydration is now being em braced by dietitians and nutrition ists,” he said.
