Senate to discuss core curriculum changes
BY PATRICK PEABODY

[The Faculty Senate will meet to-
to discuss issues concerning dif-
jnt curriculums and other affairs,
biane Kaplan, speaker for the
Tulty Senate, said the Senate
Lid be discussing some budget
jters among other things.
The Budget Information Com
be has been talking to the Vice
[ident for Finance,” Kaplan said.
Id looking at where the money has
jn going, and that should be pret-
dteresting. Also we are going to
|a heads up at what all the Execu-
Committee has been looking at.”
apian said the Senate was also
g to be looking at some cur
riculum changes.
“We will be looking at small
changes like a change in math re

the purpose of the event was
[rise money for the organization.
[We’re out here for fund raising
jolden Key,” Knowles said. “Not
that, but we really want to raise
Ireness about our society and the
[erent honor societies in general. ”
\ctivities included a four-legged
an award for best nerd laugh,
Pest for Nerd Wars king and
queen, a book-carrying relay, a triv
ia competition and a water-balloon
toss. Trophies were awarded to the
winners of the competitions.
Crowned Nerd Wars king and
queen were Carlos Serbia, senior
computer engineering major, and
Leeha Herrera, senior computer sci
ence major.
Serbia said the main reason he
came out Sunday was because of
Herrera, but was glad he did.
“I am really out here because
she (Herrera) made me come, but
I am glad that I did,” Serbia said. “I
thought that it would be cool, just
to see what was going on.”
Organizations that participated
included Honor Student Council,
the core curriculum. The state is at
tempting to standardize the core cur
riculum, and they have put out a set
of guidelines for doing so. A good
portion of us have been trying hard
to keep the same curriculum. We
have thought our core curriculum is
good for the students and keeping it
the same has been very important.”
There are only a few changes set for
revising the core curriculum, and they
change the core curriculum very little.
“The major change we are con
sidering is that we are looking to split
the six hours of required humanities
into three hours of humanities and 3
hours of visual and performing arts,”
Kaplan said. “If we do decide to pass
it, and the Coordinating Board in
Austin passes the Harlen Act, which
will mean some core curriculums will
have to be approved by the Board of
Regents, then it will have to be ap
proved in December when the Board
of Regents meets. Then in January
we will be able to make the deadline
for the course catalog, and then new
changes will be in the 1999 catalog,
and affect the incoming freshmen. ”
Also, there will be a second pro
posal about the core curriculum to
be reviewed.
“We will proceed with a complete
review of the core curriculum,” Ka
plan said. “We will form a committee
to look at the curriculum, formed of
people from all over the University.
They will be looking at adding new
courses or taking some out, and will
also look at interdisciplinary courses. ”

First A &M fraternity
hosts 25th anniversary

Sigma Phi Epsilon, the first fra
ternity chartered at Texas A&M,
celebrated its silver anniversary
this past week.
Sigma Phi Epsilon began as a
group OF 30 men on campus who
wanted to start a social organiza
tion for men. They originally
named their organization Phi Delta
Sigma, and it served as a local fra
ternity for men at Texas A&M. Af
ter expressing interest in Sigma Phi
Epsilon, the group was charted by
the national fraternity on March
31, 1973, making them the first of
ficial fraternity on campus.
Sigma Phi Epsilon members
and alumni celebrated the an
niversary with a number of activ
ities throughout the week. The
fraternity hosted a party Wednes
day and a concert Friday show
casing the band Ugly Americans.
The festivities continued Sat
urday with a tailgate party prior
to the game against Nebraska
where 56 Sigma Phi Epsilon
alumni were present to meet and
socialize with the chapter’s cur
rent members.
Brandon Drake, vice president
of programming for Sigma Phi Ep
silon and a junior construction
science major, said the purpose of
the social Saturday was to pro
mote alumni relations with cur
rent fraternity members.
“The 25th anniversary gives
the active chapter a chance to rec
ognize and thank the past mem
bers of Sigma Phi Epsilon for all
their work,” Drake said.

A post-game alumni reunion
party gave many former mem
bers of the chapter a chance to
meet with old friends and recall
shared memories.
Jim Dickson, president of Sig
ma Phi Epsilon and a senior po
litical science and finance major,
said the weekend went well.
“The weekend went better than
anyone could have imagined,
capped off by the unexpected win
over Nebraska,” Dickson said.
