Although he is currently researching food safety
and a new kind of wound-repair material. Dr. Douglas
R. Miller, an animal science research associate at Texas
A&M, recently published his first book.
Advertised with the teaser, “Intelligent life has been
observing mankind for millennia. It’s not alien. It's here.
And it’s not going to take it anymore.” the novel de
scribes how cetaceans — large sea animals — may take
over the world by 2005 out of frustration over the pol
lution and depletion of their fishing grounds.
No, his work did not appear in a scientific journal
that will spend most of its life on a library shelf gath
ering dust. And it was not published by an academic-
oriented press only to be read by scholars in his field.
Instead, Miller’s new science-fiction novel, Sole
Ownership, was published online after the traditional
method of submitting manuscripts to print publishers
led to a series of rejections and disappointments.
“It took one publisher a year to send me a rejection
letter,” Miller said. “1 had had enough of that. In 1995,
when I first started submitting it, a number of things
were being published online. So I looked up electron
ic publishers and found one that was looking for new
authors in science fiction,” he said.
Miller discovered Hard Shell Word Factory, an on
line publisher that was willing to publish his novel.
Hard Shell offers beginning authors advantages that
print publishers do not such as no agent is required,
editing and artwork are provided by the publisher and
often the percentage the author earns from profits are
greater than from traditional publishers.
Tom Retell, director of the University Press, said online
publishing is becoming an important aspect of publishing.
“It’s unusual, but it is happening. Online publish
ing is a viable method for publishing books these days.
Some books lend to this medium better than others,”
Rotell said.
But that does not mean mainstream book sellers are
left out. Hard Shell books are sold through the indus
try’s biggest online bookseller, Amazon.com, as well
as the on-line version of Barnes & Noble. Borders
Bookstore also carries Hard Shell products online.
Through Hard Shell Word Factory, and other com
panies like it, books can be downloaded over the In
ternet or mailed by disk at a substantially lower price
than the average paperback.
Sole Ownership, for instance, costs $3 to download
or $4.50 on disk.
There are some downsides to the on-line publishing.
