Colorado came back to beat then-ranked Colorado State in their first game of the year. It’s no wonder the Big 12 has five ranked teams in the AP Top-25 College Football Poll. “The Big 12 must be proud of having two [Nebraska and Kansas State] of the top five teams in the nation this week,” Texas coach Mack Brown said. M*A*S*H, Lincoln style The Nebraska Cornhuskers uti lized their off week to heal their walking wounded for their upcom ing showdown with Washington. The Buskers conducted only non-contact drills last week, not working much on offense, and are expected to be near full strength for Saturday’s nationally televised game. “We’re trying to get our players healed up,” coach Frank Solich said. “We’ve been able to move the football, and we feel confident with our offensive football team.” Running back D’Angelo Evans and quarterback Bobby Newcombe are expected to be fully healed, and defensive tack le Jason Wiltz started practice this week. Quarterback Eric Crouch is still questionable for this weekend, but safety Clint Finley, a Cuero, Texas, product, will begin practic ing and will be used in the Wash ington game. “Clint is always behind,” So lich said. “He hasn’t played all year, but he will be available some in the game.” Cyclone-mania! Break up Iowa State! First the boys from Ames shocked in-state rival Iowa. Last week, the Cyclones shutout Ball State 38-0.. “Shutouts are hard to record on any level of college football,” coach Dan McCarney said. “We had to play 50 players on offense and defense.” It was their first shutout recorded against a Division I opponent since 1980, when Iowa State, ranked No. 19, won 1-0 when Kansas forfeited. The Cyclones are on a two- game winning streak for only the second time this decade. McCarney said it was difficult to refocus the team after the Iowa win. “We’ve not had many opportu nities to come off a win in which we were a 30-point underdog.” Bishop takes Rook Kansas State quarterback Michael Bishop was forced to ac tually exert himself to defeat rookie coach Mack Brown’s Texas Longhorns on Saturday. Bishop, who claims former Texas A&M signal-caller Bucky Richardson was his favorite col lege player grow ing up, said he took great pride in beating a school from his native state. “It was good bishop to get used to playing a full game,” Bishop said. “I was a little winded, but that’s just condition ing. It was a big game for me, be ing from Texas.” Brown said Kansas State looked like the best team he had seen all year, possibly even better than UCLA. “We ran into a buzz saw this weekend,” he said. “They just whipped us. They lined up and went after us all afternoon.” Jeff Webb is a senior journalism major. As he did after hitting No. 64, Sosa took a quick curtain call to chants of “Sam-my! Sam-my!” Sosa had not gotten a hit and had struck out eight times since hitting a grand slam last Wednesday in San Diego for No. 63. He walked his first two times up against Roque, then sent a 1-0 fastball 344 feet to the opposite field, giv ing the Cubs a 4-0 lead. His second homer made it 7-0 and gave him 11 multihomer games this year, tying the ma jor league record set by Detroit’s Hank Green berg in 1938. Sosa’s 156 RBIs give him the fourth-highest single-season total in NL history. On Ttiesday night, Sosa admitted this was the worst he felt at the plate all year. “But I have confidence in myself and I will get out of this jam,” he said. Sosa entered the game at sold-out County Stadium two homers behind McGwire. The St. Louis star hit his 65th against the Brewers on Sunday. The Cardinals faced Houston on Wednesday night in St. Louis, where McGwire has hit a Busch Stadium record 33 home runs this season. The Cubs entered the day tied with the New York Mets for the NL wild-card berth. Earlier this month, Sosa connected for Nos. 59- 62 against Milwaukee during a three-game series.
