Course cancellations force adiustii

Course cancellations have stu
dents altering their schedules at
the last minute and department
heads working with them to en
sure everyones benefit.
Rick Crow, the assistant regis
trar, said there were about as
many cancellations this term as
there was last term.
Crow said in general, low en
rollment causes classes to be can
celed. There is a minimum re
quirement of 10 students for
undergraduate classes, and five in
graduate classes. If a class does
not meet the minimum require
ment, then it is canceled.
Student’s are usually notified
of these cancellations before or
soon after the semester starts.
Crow said classes can be can
celed for reasons other than low
enrollment such as a teacher quit
ting or lack of funds.
“Students enrolled in courses
canceled for other reasons are
usually notified the week before
the term starts,” Crow said.
Crow said if a course is canceled
more than two or three semesters
in a row, it is usually not offered
again. He also said the registrar's
office is compiling the number of
cancellations now, and the num
bers will not be available until the
end of the week. Crow said it is the
various department heads who
make the final decision about what
classes are canceled, and they no
tify the registrar’s office.
Dr. Charles Self, professor and
head of the journalism depart
ment, said canceling classes dis
