A s the first rap group to break into main
stream , Run DMC has been called every
thing from founding fathers in the in
dustry to spokesmen of the ’80s generation.
Tonight at Wolf Pen Creek Ampitheatre, Run
DMC will be delivering its hip-hop message to
Gen X-ers and sharing the stage with fellow rap
per Vanilla Ice and coun
try musicians Pat Green
and Jerry Jeff Walker at
the ’98 Ag Kickoff.
DMC or D (Darryl
McDaniels) said the
crowd can expect to see
hip-hop in its
original
form, not the rap they’ve seen in
videos over the past 10 years.
“Basically we’re gonna be do
ing what was done in rap music be
fore rappers started making records,
which is using a DJ, and me and run
will rap over the records,” he said.
“That’s the way it was done when rap
first started and that’s the way we’ve
always done it.”
D said he doesn’t really define
the groups’ music as old or new
school.
“You’re gonna see true school,”
he said. “Everything from 1983 to
1993. Ten years of authentic hip-hop.”
Mark Schaberg, co-promoter of Ag
Kickoff and a representative of Popu
lar Talent, said Run DMC was added
after Tropical Storm Frances
caused the postponement of the
Sept. 11 show.
“We started calling around to
see who we could add to the
bill,” Schaberg said. “It was a co
incidence that Run DMC was play
ing a show in Houston at midnight
the same night.”
Run DMC will take the stage
at 5:30 p.m. after Roger Creager,
a local country musician.
Vanilla Ice will follow Run DMC, with
Pat Green and Jerry Jeff Walker rounding
out the evening.
Gates open at 4:30 p.m.
D said it is great to be playing a show
with Vanilla Ice because it is something the
group has never done before.
“It’s cool we’re playing with Vanilla,” he
said. “We love it. We’d love four or five rap
pers sharing the stage with us.”
D said he expects the crowd to get into
the show because that’s the kind of perfor
mance the group prefers to do.
“We do the original form of rap which is
crowd participation,” he said. “It’s not about us,
it’s about ya’ll. ‘Throw your hands in the air,
make some noise, jump up and down, alright
ya’ll ready for this.’
“I hope ya’ll come through for us. Don’t di
sappoint Run DMC because we’re going to give
it all out for you.”
Run DMC, made up of rappers D and Run
(Joseph Simmons) and DJ Jam Master Flash
(Jason Mizell), started their musical journey
with It's Like That in 1983.
