went to the showing of Dazed and Confused.
“I tried to come for Top Gun, but it was sold
out,” he said.
Hearn said he came up with the idea for
Retrofest after seeing it done in other cities.
“I got here in March and was surprised it
wasn’t being done here,” he said.
“Some of my employees are college students
and they thought it was a good idea.”
Retrofest attracts many college students, but
Hearn said a large part of its fan base is non
students, as well — so much that even the Texas
A&M vs. Louisiana Tech football game did not
cause a drop in attendance for the theater.
“Surprisingly, we had a really good turnout
for Clerks that weekend,” he said.
“There is a non-student population attend
ing. We have no plans to cancel it for game
weekends.”
David Smith, a senior at Bryan High School,
saw Dazed and Confused.
“I love this movie. I’ve seen it four or five
times,” he said.
He said he hopes Retrofest will show Monty
Python:The Holy Grail.
Sophie McNeill, a junior horticulture major,
also counts Dazed and Confused as one of her
favorite movies.
“I’m from Austin, and I always love to see all
the places in the movie that I know,” she said.
She said she hopes Retrofest shows Say Any
thing in the future.
It is not always an easy task to find movies
that have not been shown on the big screen for
several years.
Hearn said a film buyer in the Dallas office
for Hollywood USA does much of the research
in finding the films.
“Some of the films are independently
owned,” Hearn said. “Some are not released by
film companies. Different film companies have
different restrictions.”
Steven Livingston, director of Aggie Cinema,
which is a part of MSC Film Society, said he would
like to see Hollywood USA continue the series.
“This town is so small, there’s only one or
two theaters,” he said. “Whatever kind of film
diversity we can get is great.”
