in advance.”
The meals are prepared
from recipes created by
Stephenson and his family.
He said while there is a
heavy Anglo-German influ
ence, the cuisine reflects a
worldly view.
“I have learned to cook in
places like Athens, Greece, and
Vienna, Austria,” Stephenson
said. “Wherever 1 travelled. I’d
look into the kitchen.”
Robertson had no experi
ence in the culinary arts when
he started at Remedies.
He said Stephenson has
taught him much about meal
making.
“Other than cooking around
my place, I had no experi
ence,” Robertson said. “I went
to the restaurant one night
when I was looking to work
there and I caught on.”
To go along with the meals
Remedies offers an extensive
wine and beer list.
Diners have the option of
tasting a variety of wines, be
fore choosing one.
The restaurant has a wine-
master, a member of the wait
staff devoted solely to handling
the wine.
Stephenson has close ties to
the community and Texas A&M
University, guests and staff mem
bers are associated with A&M.
Rick Davis, a local attorney,
said the restaurant is one of his
family’s favorite eateries.
“It’s really quaint and qui
et,” Davis said. “The owner is
very personable, and they treat
you like family.”
Davis said the food is
among the best he has ever
eaten.
“My favorite is the pork ten
derloin, but everything is ex
cellent,” Davis said.
Stephenson said a gour
mand’s glee is what he seeks.
“It is a great feeling when
people leave saying ‘This is the
best food I’ve ever had,”’
Stephenson said.
If discriminating diners
tire of the impersonal, rapid
pace of their usual eateries,
they might find a culinary
cure at Remedies.

Chan battles bad guys on-screen,
Taiwanese legislature off-screen
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Known on film for
zinging the bad guys, Jackie Chan has a soft
spot in his heart for animals.
The Hong Kong action
star is asking the Tai
wanese legislature to pass
the nation’s first animal
protection law, one that
would ban the killing of
stray dogs.
“I was saddened to
learn recently that dogs in
Taiwan are being killed cru
elly by poisoning, electro
cution and starvation. This treatment of
dogs goes against everything that an ad
vanced, human nation like Taiwan repre
sents,” Chan wrote in a Sept. 16 letter to
Secretary General Liu Pi-Liang.
Chan, who stars in the new movie Rush
Hour, enjoys Tom Cruise-like status in Hong
Kong and Japan.
He made the appeal on behalf of the
group People for the Ethical Treatment of An
imals, which says there are some 2 million
stray dogs on the streets of Taiwan.
Dogs are popular pets on the island.

As a college student, what attracted you to
Union Carbide?
"As a college student, I was introduced to Union
Carbide through the summer Intern program. After
interning with the company for two summers, what
attracted me to a full-time position with Union
Carbide was the opportunity to be involved, not only
with process improvement projects, but also with the
day-to-day operations of a production unit."
Why has Union Carbide been the right choice
for your career?
"Union Carbide has offered me the opportunity to
expand my chemical engineering education
through my involvement in the many different
aspects of plant operations. These include
Responsible Cate, project improvement work,
day-to-day operations, environmental compliance,
marketing and research and development."
What advice would you offer about choosing
a career?
"My advice for someone choosing a career would
be to get involved with a professional society such
as AIChE. The corporate representatives that
participate in these meetings are excellent sources
of information for what opportunities exist for a
chemical engineer. Also, try to participate in a
summer intern program. The knowledge you can
gain from a summer intern experience is extremely
valuable when making a career choice."
