Senate considers insurance bill BuSH

The Battalion
Graduate students with
fellowships and scholarships
will have access to the same
insurance benefits provided
to graduate students with as-
sistantships if a bill before
the Faculty Senate is ap
proved today at the first
meeting of the fall semester.
That resolution, which
was recommended to the
Senate by the Personnel and
Welfare Committee, would
allow fellowship and schol
arship graduate students to
participate in group insur
ance plans like those provid
ed to University employees
and other graduate students.
The resolution from the
committee requests that mea
sures to provide insurance to
fellowship holders be imple
mented before Sept. 1, 1999.
The Faculty Senate will
also review a proposal to
change the name of the De
partment of Meteorology to
the Department of Atmos
pheric Sciences.
This change, if approved,
would cause the graduate
degrees awarded by the de
partment to read “Atmos
pheric Sciences,” while the
undergraduate degrees con
ferred would continue to
read “Meteorology.”
Requests to add both grad
uate and undergraduate
classes will be examined by
the Faculty Senate. Four
graduate and nine under
graduate courses await the
Senate’s approval.
The Faculty Senate will
also be considering a posi
tion statement on distance
education, the use of tech
nology such as the Internet
to teach students outside of
the classroom.
If approved, the position
statement would encourage
faculty and the administra
tion to develop and use dis
tance education resources.

today from 3 to 7 p.m. in 601

Goldwater also said the bike
overcrowding has been an is
sue for a while.
"Bikes have always had very
restricted parking on campus,"
Goldwater said. “The Universi
ty is responsible for providing
parking spaces for the bikes.
We are going to take a look at
the campus on the whole and
try to make a plan for solving
this problem.’’
The Student Senate has also
recently started to look at this
problem.
Justin Toal, chair of the Stu
dent Services Committee, said
the issue has been raised in the
Student Senate.
“The Student Senate is going
to assess the situation and begin
to research possible solution for
this problem," Toal said.
