Today marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, a month that has been designated to cele brate Hispanic culture and its in fluence on theUnited States. The celebration began in 1968 when President Lyndon Johnson and the 90th Congress approved the request to issue an annual proclamation designating the week including Sept. 15 and 16 as Na tional Hispanic Heritage Week and calling upon the people of the Unit ed States, especially the education al community, to observe such a week with appropriate ceremonies and activities. On Aug. 17, 1988 President Ronald Reagan and the 100th Con gress approved Public Law 100-402 which extended the observation into National Hispanic Heritage Month held from September 15 through October 15 each year. Geraldo Olivo, a senior jour nalism major, said he appreciates the significance of Hispanic Her itage Month. “It’s a celebration of who we are as a people, where we come from, and the contributions we’ve made to society in America. “It’s also about the beauty of our people and the strengths that one finds when one knows their own personal background." Oli vo said. As with every month designated to celebrate a group of people. His panic Heritage Month not only rec ognizes the influence Hispanic cul ture has had on the United States, hut also serves as a learning oppor tunity for anyone willing to learn about this diverse population.
