SPORTS IN BRIEF
A&M gets 3 wins
in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The No. 19 Texas A&M Volleyball
Team grabbed three more victories
in the All Sports Challenge in Ann
Arbor, Mich., and improved to 6-1
on the season.
The Aggies defeated North Car
olina 15-6, 15-11, 15-5 in their
opening match and followed that
with a 15-5, 15-5, 17-15 victory
over Louisiana State.
The Aggies’ third game was a re
match against Michigan from last
year’s NCAA match up. The Aggies de
feated Michigan last year and again
this year 16-14,15-17,15-5,15-8.
The win gave the Aggies the tour
nament title with senior Stacy Syko-
ra named tournament MVP Amber
Woolsey and Jenna Moscovic were
named to the All-Tournament team.
Sosa slams 61,62 for tie
CHICAGO (AP) — Goodbye Babe, so long
Roger. Slammin’ Sammy hit two more homers
to tie Mark McGwire — and now they’re in
the greatest home run derby of all time.
Sammy Sosa hit Nos. 61 and 62 against the
Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday to match the
record McGwire had set five days earlier.
With two powerful swings on a spectacu
lar and wild afternoon at Wrigley Field, Sosa
passed Babe Ruth and Roger Maris.
Sosa and McGwire now have two weeks
left in their race for the most treasured
record in baseball in one of the sport’s most
unforgettable seasons.
“It’s unbelievable. It was something that
even I can’t believe I was doing,’’ Sosa said
following the Cubs’ 11-10, 10-inning victory.
“It can happen to two people, Mark and I.”
Sosa, who trailed McGwire 24-9 in late
May, homered off Bronswell Patrick in the
fifth inning, sending an 0-1 pitch 480 feet into
the street behind the left-field fence at
Wrigley Field.
He hit another 480-foot homer in the ninth,
a solo shot off Eric Plunk.
That one dropped Ruth into fourth place
on the single-season list with 60, which he hit
in 1927.
Maris hit 61 homers in 1961 for a record
that McGwire broke Thesday against the Cubs
in St. Louis.
Now, amazingly, a mark that had stood
for 37 years has been passed twice in less
than a week.
With tears and sweat running down his
face as he sat in the dugout after his second
triumphant tour around the bases, Sosa came
out for three emotional curtain calls.
Fans littered the field with paper cups and
other debris while chanting “Sam-mee! Sam-
mee!’’ causing a delay that lasted six minutes.
“I don’t usually cry, but I cry inside. I was
blowing kisses to my mother, I was crying a
little bit,” Sosa said.
Aikman sidelined with fm

talion
DENVER (AP) — It was
hardly the kind of punish
ing hit that might have sent
TVoy Aikman to the sideline
with another concussion.
The innocent dive turned
out to be even worse.
Aikman is expected to
miss 4-8 weeks after frac
turing his collarbone in
the second quarter of the
Dallas Cowboys' 42-23
loss to the Denver Bron
cos on Sunday
Aikman, who hasn't
missed a start because of
injury since Dec. 4, 1994,
avoided a direct hit. but
broke the left clavicle
when he landed awk
wardly on a 6-yard scram
ble near the sideline.
“It’s disappointing, no
question,” said Aikman,
his left arm resting in a
Cow
boy-blue
sling.
