The Benz Gallery of Floral Art exhibit “Ships, Shores and Seas” is on display until Oct. 28, featuring a variety of works, includ ing watercolor and oil paintings, and pic tures designed using dried flowers and leaves. Olive Black, chair for the exhibit and one of the presenting artists, said the exhibit is a great opportunity for members of the league to present their work and hopefully sell some of their pieces. “We have great interest in it,” Black said. “In two months of showing, we probably sell two or three pieces, which I think is just terrific.” The exhibit features works from amateurs and professionals, and all works are from members of the league, she said. Black said she has been painting for 20 years and has always been interested in cre ating her own art works. 1 “It’s something I wanted to do all my life,” she said. “I finally took lessons and I just caught on and loved it.” Marci Boone, another artist contributing to the exhibit, said she enjoys entering ex hibits, and appreciates the exposure she gets as an artist from these exhibits. “I paint for pleasure, but I also try to sell pieces,” Boone said. Jim Johnson, director of the Benz Gallery of Floral Art, said his job is to organize the artwork and complement the works with pieces from the Benz Gallery Collection. "Fve been here since the fall of 1984 when the Horticulture Building opened,” Johnson said. “We’ve been doing this since then.” Johnson said many people are not aware that the Benz Gallery exists. “It can be hard to get people out here, be cause you can’t just park and walk in,” he said. “ Most people are pleasantly surprised by the building, the gallery itself and the dif ferent things that we put on display. It’s a great place to brown bag. The fact that we combine natural lighting with plants and art makes it unique. ” The exhibit is open Monday through Fri day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jana McCormick, a senior horticulture major, views one of the pieces in the "Ship's.
