Stage Center brings
'Charley's Aunt'
for a visit
BY BETH FOCHT
The Battalion
T ucked in a comer at the end of Main
Street in downtown Bryan is a small
theater simply named Stage Center.
Within these walls, actors are memorizing
and perfecting last-minute lines and stage di
rections while the seamstress whips her nee
dle through the period costumes, so they will
be perfect by opening night.
The cast and crew at Stage Center are get
ting ready for the first play in this season’s
line up, “Charley’s Aunt,” a period comedy
set in turn-of-the-century London.
Julie Angelo, director of “Charley’s Aunt,”
said the play has been a stage standard for
comedic actors since 1925.
“It is a story about two Oxford students try
ing to win the hearts of two young ladies, but
of course, it is not that simple,” Angelo said.
“The two young men face following the so
cial norms of dating during that period and
must find a female chaperone to accompany
the group on their outing.”
Angelo said the young men convince one
of their friends to dress up as their aunt, a
would-be female chaperone, so they can
work their charms on the objects of their af
fection.
“These social issues are what brings the
comedy out in this play,” she said.

should be able to relate to the play even
though it is set in a different time period.
“College students have always had similar
worries,” Angelo said.
“You hear several lines throughout the play
in regard to ‘next semester I really plan to
study and have better grades’ or the all-too-
familiar phrase of ‘Dad is sending me some
more money.’”
Lori Hunnicutt, a junior education major-
who plays the character of Kitty , said stu
dents should enjoy the storyline.
“It is a comedy, and most people like a
good comedy,” she said. “It is definitely
something students can relate to and have a
good time with. ”
Stephen Lair, who plays the character of
Charley, said he hopes people realize there are
cultural things offered in Bryan-College Station.
“There are three community theaters in
town with productions like ‘Charley’s Aunt’
all of the time,” he said. “Most students are
never exposed to these options, and 1 hope
‘Charley’s Aunt’ and other productions will
continue to gain recognition with the student
population of this community.”
“Charley’s Aunt” will run Sept. 3-5, 10-12
and 17-19 at 7:30 p.m. at Stage Center in
downtown Bryan.
Tickets can be purchased in advance at the
MSC Box Office or by calling Stage Center at
823-4297. Tickets may also be purchased at
the door the night of the show.
Students can contact Stage Center for
more information about “Charley’s Aunt” or
other upcoming productions.
“It’s a real good crowd and we
always have a lot of responsive,
fun people come out,” Fullerton
said.
Since the band’s conception
three years ago, it has frequently
played in venues around the Col
lege Station area, including Dixie
Theater and Third Floor Cantina.
Breedlove played at Shadow
Canyon previously during the
North by Northgate music festival
this past spring.
“We enjoy playing at Shadow
Canyon because it's a bigger place
and closer to campus,” he said.
Dan Brightwell, manager of
Shadow Canyon, is looking for
ward to the show as well.
“Breedlove has a big following
down here. We always have a
good crowd come out,” Bright-
well said. “We usually get pretty
close to capacity whenever they
play here."
The quintet consists of Dan
Dyer on vocals, Fullerton on gui
tar, Josh Dawkins on bass, Jason
White on drums and Ezra
Reynolds on keyboards.
All the members except for
Dyer, attended McCallum High
School in Austin.
