“By knowing who people are, you can
watch each others’ backs in case you go out
of town."
National Night Out was designed to height
en crime and drug prevention awareness,
generate support for local anti-crime pro
grams, strengthen police and community re
lationships and let criminals know that neigh
borhoods are organized and are fighting back.
National Night Out began on Monday
night at Post Oak Mall with the National Night
Out Kick-off Party. Police were on hand to an
swer questions on a variety of topics.
Sponsored by the National Association of
Town Watch, National Night Out is locally sup
ported by the police departments of Bryan
and College Station, as well as the Brazos
County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Depart
ment of Public Safety.
Herrera said, while the event has been suc
cessful, he hopes it will continue to get better.
“This has been going on here for five or six
years,” he said. “More participation would be
great for next year.”
