Disaster followed the Griswold family on its trip
across the Atlantic, but a "European Vacation" for
the Texas A&M Men's Basketball Team may be the
perfect way for players to bond with new Aggie
coach Melvin Watkins.
"I think this is a huge advantage," forward
Aaron Jack said. "We get to know each other while
we're stuck together before school starts."
The nine returning Aggies who are eligible to go
on the trip will leave College Station on August 15 for
Germany and Holland to play five exhibition games
against "Division I" professional teams in Europe.
The team started practice Monday, something it
was able to do because of the overseas trip. Official
practice does not start until October 15 and Watkins
said the trip gives coaches and players an opportu
nity to get to know each other before the college

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) —
Texas Tech lost additional schol
arships in four sports Tuesday
and received an extra year of pro
bation because of rampant viola
tions of NCAA rules.
The penalties announced by the
NCAA were added to those the
school imposed on itself. The
scholarship losses will affect the
football, baseball and men's and
women's basketball teams
There were no postseason bans
or reduced television appearances,
but the school may lose at least
$380,000 in men's basketball tour

tournament revenue slashed.
"This is a case about a lack of
institutional control and a failure
to monitor the program, especially
the men's basketball and football
programs," Bonnie Slatton, acting
chair of the Division I Committee
on Infractions, said. "I hope that
this serves as a warning to all of us
that we must be forever vigilant."
Some of the rules Tech broke
involved eligibility, extra benefits,
recruiting and Linethical conduct,
plus some secondary violations.
Tech's problems first surfaced
in March 1995 and continued to
occur for more than two years,
even after the NCAA began inves
tigating in February 1996 and the
school started an internal audit in
summer 1997.
The ongoing scandals and the
were on probation, the school was
not in jeopardy of receiving the
"death penalty." However, the
school's problems and the way it
handled the investigation left it
open to more severe penalties.
In April, Tech put itself on three
years' probation and limited its
scholarships in six sports. Tuesday,
the NCAA did not add to the
school's punishments to the men's
track and men's golf teams.
