LOS ANGELES (AP) —
Puppeteer Shari Lewis, the chil
dren's entertainer who charmed
youngsters for decades with furry
sidekicks Lamb Chop, Charlie
Horse and Hush Puppy, died of
cancer, her publicist said today.
Lewis, diagnosed with uterine
cancer in June, was undergoing
chemotherapy when she developed
pneumonia and died Sunday at
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center,
spokesperson Maggie Begley said.
She and members of the family
said Lewis was 65, although refer
ence books listed her date of birth as
Jan. 17, 1934, which would have
made her 64.
After the treatments started six
weeks ago, the Emmy Award-win
ning ventriloquist cut short produc
tion in Vancouver for her latest PBS
children's series, ''The Charlie
Horse Music Pizza."
She billed the series as an educa
tional "Cheers" for children that
focused on music. The show pre
miered Jan. 5.
Lewis won 12 Emmys, including
five for her last PBS series, "Lamb
Chop's Play-Along."
Lewis and Lamb Chop pre
miered on television's "The Captain
Kangaroo Show" in the mid 1950s
children's books.
