NEW BRAUNFELS (AP) — Former Air Force Academy cadet David Graham s confession that he killed a 16-year-old girl to satisfy his fiancee's demand for "wom anly vengeance" was read to the jury at his trial Tuesday. "1 just pointed and shot," Graham wrote in his police statement, explaining he fired twice at schoolmate Adrianne Jones with a 9mm Makarov pis tol on Dec. 4, 1995. As his chilling words were read in court, Graham, his fam ily and relatives of Jones sat quietly. Graham'^ then-fiancee, Diane Zamora, soon to become a Naval Academy midshipman, demanded the killing because Graham told her he'd had sex one night with Jones, he wrote in the statement. Zamora felt "betrayed, deceived, and forgotten," Graham wrote. "When this precious relationship we had was damaged by my thoughtless actions, the only thing that could satisfy her womanly vengeance was the life of the one that had, for an instant, taken her place," Graham wrote. Zamora was convicted of capital murder in February in Fort Worth and is serving a life prison sentence. Graham, 20, faces the same charge and would face the same sentence if convicted since pros ecutors are not seeking the death penalty. Defense attorneys claim Graham falsely confessed to the crime because of his love for Zamora. They contend Zamora acted alone and that Graham was not present when Jones was killed. His attorneys say Graham helped cover up the crime and told Zamora he would confess along with her if she were ever caught. Defense and prosecution attorneys claim Graham and Jones never had sex even though he said they did in his confession. Zamora was transported to New Braunfels yester day, where she is expected to appear in a court hear ing today to determine whether she will be testifying in Graham's trial as a defense witness. Prosecutors have offered "use testimony immuni ty" if she is called as a witness, meaning her testimo ny cannot be used against her in the future. Her attor ney, John Linebarger, said he will advise her to assert her Fifth Amendment right not to testify. Questioned by Tarrant County prosecutor Mike Parrish, Air Force agent Roy Stalvey testified Graham was interviewed at length in September 1996, shortly after he began attending the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado. Graham consented to the interview, vol,' typed his statement using an Air Force comps declined to speak w ith a lawyer, Stalvey said In cross-examination by defense attome Cogdell, Stalvey acknowledged Graham did vide Ins w ntten statement until >dter a Ur; t ast Police Department detective who traveled tn-M.. CORPUS CHRISTI (AP) — When the Selena Memorial on the bayfront was dedicated one year ago, fans were encouraged to leave handwritten messages to the slain Tejano star on wooden planks that encircle part of the memorial's main column. Within one month, messages written in blue magic marker and ballpoint pen overflowed onto the column itself, which serves as a backdrop for the bronze Selena sculpture. Some fans used lipstick to scrawl messages like "We love you, Selena" on the large, sculpted white rose above the dedication inscription. Plans are in the works to replace the 12 wooden planks with a bronze plaque, warning visitors that graffi ti no longer has a place on the bayfront overlook dedicated to Selena's memory. But the local phil anthropist who funded the $600,000 memorial said removing the planks won't discourage people from leav ing messages on the statue. "The boards are serving a pur pose," Dusty Durrill, whose Devary Durrill Foundation paid for the memorial, which stands at the entrance of the Peoples Street T- Head said. "It gives people a place to write. Without the boards, they'll write all over the statue." Selena was gunned down at a local motel March 31, 1995, after achieving international fame for her music. Her former fan club president, Yolanda Saldivar, is serving a life sentence in prison for the murder. Keeping up with the prolifera tion of messages at the Selena memorial has become a regular rou tine for city workers. Each week, they rub a special solvent on the memorial in an effort to keep the personalized messages off the white center col umn. The wooden planks are repainted twice a week to keep up with the steady stream of visitors who leave behind signatures and, in some cases, gang signs. Some visitors say the personal signatures are a humble tribute from those fans who didn't have the $100 to buy an engraved brick in the pavilion's paved floor. " That's how people show their love for her," Houston visitor Becky Hawkins, 40, said. "I personally don't want to write anything, but as long as people don't write on the statue, 1 think it's OK." Most visitors immediately spot the freehand inscriptions alongside the memorial's bronze plaque while looking at the Selena statue. The words in black marker writ ten on the red brick are more diffi cult to see. Raynaldo Coronado, 19, said he began reading the personal messages after he bowed his head in prayer. I he words remind visi tors of how deeply Selena touched the lives of others, said Coronado, 19, who was visiting from Weslaco this week. "On the floor, it's OK," he said while standing on the bayfront side of the memorial, facing away from the traffic on Shoreline Boulevard. "I came over to this side so I could see her face. But the thing 1 hate is seeing the graffiti around it, on the white background." Other fans have no patience for what they see as disrespect for Selena's memory. "People think it's a big Hallmark greeting card or some thing, said San Antonio tourist Roxanne Cortinas, 20, while sitting on the statue's bottom step Monday afternoon. "It's a memorial A and that's how people should treat it." Despite protest from the statue's sponsor, the city already has accepted bids for the three bronze plaques that will be placed at dif- erent points along the statue, so visitors won't miss the warning not to leave messages behind. City Assistant Park Director Mike Gordon said. "Where do you draw the line?" Gordon said. "They're leaving mes- sages or, the rose and the statue. I here s always one in the crowd."
