Convicted priest
denied involvement
in church ministry
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) —
Convicted pedophile priest Rudolph
"Rudy" Kos no longer can be in
volved in Catholic Church ministry
of any kind, the Vatican has decided.
Acting on a request from the
Catholic Diocese of Dallas, the Vati
can has taken the rare step of return
ing Kos to lay status, the Fort Worth
Star-Telegram reported Wednesday.
The 53-year-old is serving a life
sentence at a prison in Huntsville.
Genny Carder of Irving, a friend
of Kos' who testified on his behalf
at his criminal trial, voiced anger at
his removal.
"I don't think that's quite right.
I think he is a priest, and I think he
always will be," Carder said.
The Catholic Diocese of Dallas
was ordered last July to pay $119.6
million in a civil suit brought by 10
former altar boys and the parents
of an 11 th who committed suicide.
The Vatican's action prohibits
Kos from being called father or rev
erend, although he can remain a
Catholic, officials said. It also re
lieves the Dallas Diocese of financial
responsibility for Kos if he ever is re
leased from prison, Williams said.
Kos was suspended from his
priestly functions and benefits in
1993, shortly after accusations sur
faced concerning his relationship at
three area churches with altar boys.
