USA team holds tryouts
World championship team invites collegians,
CBA veterans to replace NBA roster players
CHICAGO (AP) — With NBA
players ordered to stay home, for
mer Michigan star Jimmy King and
Duke standout Trajan Langdon are
among those who will be compet
ing for a spot on the U.S. world
championship team.
USA Basketball released a list
yesterday of the 30 players invited
to training camp, which is being
held this week at the Moody Bible
Institute. The roster will be pared to
a 12-man team next week, with the
1998 FIBA World Championships
July 21-Aug. 9 in Athens, Greece.
"We feel confident that out of
this group we can and will field a
very competitive team, a team that
will go out and try to win the
world championship," coach Rudy
Tomjanovich said.
Those invited include four cur
rent college players — Langdon;
Richard Hamilton of Connecticut;
Mateen Cleaves of Michigan State
and Evan Eschmeyer of
Northwestern — and two others,
Earl Boykins of Eastern Michigan
and Purdue's Brad Miller, who just
completed their eligibility.
There also are 12 CBA players,
nine who played overseas and
three who played both overseas
and in the CBA.
USA Basketball had selected 12
NBA players to represent the
United States in the world cham
pionships. But with an NBA lock
out looming July 1, the NBA play
ers threatened to boycott the
world championships.
USA Basketball moved first,
announcing June 16 it was drop
ping the NBA stars and replacing
them with current college play
ers, CBA players and Americans
playing overseas.
But some players turned down
the invitations, saying they did not
want to interfere with the lockout.
Dominique Wilkins said he consid
ered it, but decided against trying
out because he did not want to
betray the NBA players.
The 12 NBA players on the U.S.
team were: Tim Duncan (San
Antonio), Tim Hardaway (Miami),
Vin Baker and Gary Payton
(Seattle), Terrell Brandon
(Milwaukee), Kevin Garnett and
Tom Gugliotta (Minnesota), Grant
Hill (Detroit), Allan Houston (New
York), Christian Laettner (Atlanta),
Glen Rice (Charlotte) and Chris
Webber (Sacramento).
The United States, with a team
of NBA players, won the World
Championships in Toronto in 1994.
