Rain relief
Scattered showers provide small [

HOUSTON (AP)—Some areas of
parched Southeast Texas looked for a
second straight day of rain yesterday
but the relief from the drought ap
peared to be limited to counties clos
est to the Gulf of Mexico.
As much as 8.3 inches of rain fell
in the 24 hours through Monday
morning in Matagorda County, 6
inches in the Clute area of Brazoria
County and up to 5 inches in eastern
Chambers County.
"Everything was mainly along the
coast," National Weather Service fore
caster Dan Darbe said.
An area of disturbed weather,
which had caused flooding in Lake
Charles, La., brought the rain to
Southeast Texas as it drifted over the
Texas coast.
Beaumont got more than 2
1/2 inches of rain. Port Arthur
had 3 inches.
By Monday the tropical mois
ture from the Gulf had shifted a bit
to the west and heightened
prospects of localized heavy rain,
mainly west of Galveston Bay and
south of Interstate 10.
Forecasters said that meant the
bulk of the showers cou Id be expected
between Houston and Coi
